September 9th, 1972: Prepare for Take-Off! The New Saturday Morning Cartoons Are HERE!
Alright, everyone, the waiting is finally over! It's September 9th, 1972, and this morning is what we've been dreaming about all summer long. New school year, new everything, but most importantly: NEW SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS!
You know how it goes. After Christmas, we get through the repeats and then the long, boring summer of reruns. But that just makes this day even more special. This is when the networks unleash their biggest, wildest, and weirdest new shows. Forget your "ABC Afterschool Specials" or whatever prime-time dramas the grown-ups are glued to – this is the real television event of the year! My TV Guide has been practically glued to my hand for weeks, dog-eared and marked up. I can't wait to see what gems they've cooked up for us.
Let's dive into the lineups, shall we?
CBS: Bigger Movies, Bigger Laughs!
CBS is really stepping up their game this year, especially with the biggest news: The New Scooby-Doo Movies! This is huge! It’s not just regular episodes; now Scooby and the gang are teaming up with celebrities every week! Imagine, they’re going to be with real stars like Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges, and even Batman and Robin! This sounds like a whole new level of mystery and excitement. Scooby is still the king, but now he’s bringing famous friends along for the ride.
And guess what else is new on CBS? Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids! I’ve seen commercials, and it looks like a whole new kind of cartoon. It’s about a bunch of kids from a junkyard, and it looks like it's going to be really funny, but maybe teach us stuff too. Plus, Josie and the Pussycats are back, but get this – they’re now Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space! Seriously, they’re flying around in space solving mysteries! How cool is that? Looks like the Hair Bear Bunch is back too, bringing more hilarious escape attempts. CBS is definitely pulling out all the stops this year!
ABC: Music and Mystery Continue to Rule!
ABC knows what we love: music and mysteries! The Osmonds have their own cartoon now, just like The Jackson 5ive did last year (and The Jackson 5ive is back too!). It’s going to be awesome to see Donny, Marie, and the whole family in animated adventures with their dog. And speaking of families, The Brady Kids are getting their own cartoon! I love The Brady Bunch, so seeing Marcia, Jan, Greg, and the whole gang in animated form, with their flying horse and magical genie, sounds like pure fun.
Kid Power is another new one for ABC, based on a comic strip, and it looks like it’s going to be all about neighborhood adventures. Plus, old favorites like The Funky Phantom are still around, bringing their revolutionary ghost antics to our mornings.
NBC: Sci-Fi and Wild Animals!
NBC is trying some interesting new things! They’ve got a brand new show called Sealab 2020, which looks like it’s going to be all about underwater adventures and protecting the ocean. That sounds pretty serious and cool. They also have Lassie's Rescue Rangers, where Lassie and her animal friends save the day, and The Barkleys, which looks like a cartoon version of "All in the Family" but with dogs!
Of course, NBC is also sticking with some classic laughs, with The Woody Woodpecker Show and The Pink Panther Show bringing their timeless humor. And I hear we might even get some more Jetsons reruns, which always makes me feel like I’m visiting the future!
The Best Morning of the Week!
This morning is just buzzing with excitement. That smell of toast, the clatter of cereal bowls, the distant sound of your parents still sleeping... it’s all part of the magic. Every commercial break feels like a mini-adventure too, with those catchy jingles for new cereals like Franken Berry or Boo Berry, or ads for the latest Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle, or those amazing new Shrinky Dinks kits! You just know you’re going to be bugging your parents for something later.
It’s more than just watching cartoons; it’s about sharing this feeling with millions of other kids across the country, all of us glued to our TVs, discovering new worlds together. 1972 is going to be a huge year for Saturday mornings. Now, if you'll excuse me, the theme music for The New Scooby-Doo Movies is starting!
What are you watching first today? Let me know what you think of the new lineup!
