Unveiling Nocturnis: Your Portal to a City of Shadows and Secrets
Hello, fellow travelers of the strange and the unsettling!
For decades, the city of Nocturnis has lived within the confines of my imagination, growing, evolving, and festering with untold stories. Now, after years of development, it's time to pull back the veil and invite you into its shadowed streets, its corrupt halls, and its terrifying wilderness. This blog series is dedicated to revealing every dark corner of Nocturnis, a world designed to be both a rich narrative experience and a thrilling setting for your own adventures using Ken St. Andre's Monsters Monsters 2.7 Edition.
What is Nocturnis? A Glimpse into the Abyss
Imagine a metropolis where the very air hums with ancient malice, where the line between reality and nightmare is impossibly thin. Nocturnis is nestled in a secluded valley at the foot of the foreboding Mount Nocturnis, a place where cosmic horrors whisper from beyond the stars and pervasive corruption has seeped into the very foundations of society. From its "old money" founding families like the calculating Blackwoods and the subtly powerful Hedges, to its bizarre Nocturnis Wrestling League, this city is a crucible of human depravity and otherworldly dread, infused with the gritty, cynical spirit of 1970s neo-noir.
Here, a thunderous storm can tear open multiverse portals, swallowing buildings and people whole, leaving behind only eerie voids. Survival is a constant struggle, sanity is a precious commodity, and every secret uncovered might lead you closer to a truth too terrible to bear.

The Complete Timeline of Nocturnis
I. The Ancient Foundation - The Age of the Zim
The enigmatic and technologically advanced race known as the Zim arrived on Earth, fleeing an invasion by ancient Egyptians. They sought to establish a foothold for their survival. The Zim built a city at a nexus of ley lines, which would become the foundation of Nocturnis, using advanced cosmic construction technologies. Their primary goal was survival, but their technology and presence had strange side effects, potentially opening pathways to otherworldly forces. A power-mad Zim wizard may have delved into Lovecraftian-like mythos, leaving a residual strangeness. Eventually, the Zim left or their civilization collapsed, leaving behind their mysterious city.
II. The Age of Conflict: The Aztar and The Holy War
After the Zim's departure, the region that would become Nocturnis continued to be a site of profound, often violent, spiritual and physical struggles.
The Arrival of the Aztar Tribe: The Aztar Tribe, a Native American culture similar to the Havasupai and Pueblo cliff-dwelling tribes, discovered the hidden valley and the unique energies of Mount Nocturnis. They settled in cliff dwellings (their "cleft city") nestled high on the slopes of Mount Nocturnis, ingeniously integrating their settlements into the natural rock formations for defense. They also possessed hidden valleys and sacred burial grounds.
Culture & Wisdom: The Aztar became the ancient keepers of the valley's true history and esoteric knowledge. They possessed a profound understanding of the ley lines, Mount Nocturnis's volcanic nature ("Deep Slumberer's Influence"), and the malevolent entities within the Haunted Wood. Their culture was rich with oral traditions, sacred rituals, and a deep respect for the balance of nature, even the corrupted nature of the valley. Their shamans and elders were powerful figures, capable of interpreting the "whispers from the earth" (pervasive psychic resonance from ley lines) and the "distorted reflections" (fleeting, impossible glimpses of other realities near interdimensional gateways).
Relationship with the Valley's Horrors: The Aztar did not fight the horrors of Nocturnis with brute force; they coexisted with a wary respect, focusing on containment, spiritual protection, and maintaining a delicate balance. They might even have ancient treaties or understandings with certain lesser entities.
The Ancient War of the Goat Tribe: The Aztar found themselves in a pivotal and brutal conflict with the Goat Tribe.
Shub-Niggurath and the Goat Tribe: Deep within a particularly dark and primordial part of the Haunted Wood, or a hidden cave system beneath it, lay a strong influence or manifestation of Shub-Niggurath, the Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young. Her "Goat Tribe" were monstrous, often grotesque, satyr-like or goat-headed humanoids, or corrupted beasts of the forest. They were feral, chaotic, and devoted to their "Goat Mother," representing a primal, aggressive manifestation of the Haunted Wood's evil.
The Alliance Against the Goat Tribe: Faced with the escalating, destructive incursions of Shub-Niggurath's Goat Tribe, an unlikely and desperate alliance was forged: the French Templars joined forces with the Aztar Native American tribe. This was not a pact with a lesser evil, but a holy war against a common, overwhelming foe that threatened to consume the valley.
The French Templars and the Monastery of the Silent Vigil: These were French Templars, a splinter group or offshoot order of the historical Knights Templar. Following the suppression of their order, they went underground, continuing a secret crusade against ancient evils. They were drawn to Nocturnis by whispers of the valley's dark energies, by following leads from ancient, forbidden texts, or specifically by the escalating threat of the Goat Tribe. They arrived bringing significant wealth, powerful sacred artifacts, forbidden texts, and superior weaponry for their era. They established a fortified monastery, the Monastery of the Silent Vigil, in a strategically defensible but isolated location on the lower slopes of Mount Nocturnis, or at the edge of the Haunted Wood, serving as a base for their holy war. The French Templars, with their martial prowess and knowledge of ancient evils, were key in organizing the European side of this alliance. They recognized the Aztar's deep understanding of the land and its spiritual forces as invaluable. Together, they formed a formidable, albeit desperate, front against the Goat Tribe, pushing them back into the deepest, most corrupted parts of the Haunted Wood.
Lasting Scars: This ancient war left profound scars on the land, creating areas of negative energy and attracting malevolent entities. It solidified the Aztar's role as guardians and influenced their spiritual beliefs.
III. The Founding/Early Days (Post-Zim/Aztar) - Early-to-Mid 1700s
Later human settlers arrived in the valley, encountering the Zim ruins and potentially remnants of the Aztar. These included:
Diverse Settlers: Displaced Acadian families seeking refuge, a religious group fleeing persecution, hardy frontiersmen and trappers, and individuals drawn by the lure of arcane energies and forgotten lore.
The De La Cruz Family (16th/17th Century): A Spanish expedition, arriving earlier than the main human settlement, driven by zealous faith. They were crusaders who stumbled upon profound and terrifying phenomena, interpreting them through a religious worldview. They perceived the pervasive psychic resonance from ley lines as "Diablo's Tongue" or "Voices of the Damned." The sentient, hostile Haunted Wood was "El Bosque Maldito" (The Cursed Forest). The oppressive presence of the entity beneath Mount Nocturnis was a "Demonio de la MontaƱa" (Mountain Demon) or "Gigante Pagano" (Pagan Giant). Fleeting, impossible glimpses of other realities near interdimensional gateways were "Visiones del Infierno" (Visions of Hell) or "Espejos del Demonio" (Mirrors of the Demonio). They noted the subtly mind-altering water from the river/lake, perceiving it as "Aguas Embrujadas" (Haunted Waters) or "Aguas del Pecado" (Waters of Sin). These encounters solidified their belief that Nocturnis was a battleground between God and the Devil, fueling their centuries-long, secret crusade.
French Creole Families: Migrating from Louisiana, these families brought a distinct blend of French, African, and Caribbean influences, introducing rich traditions, culinary arts, unique dialect, and vibrant folklore (Loup-Garous, Voodoo/Hoodoo, Ghosts/Hauntings, Bayou Spirits). Their unique cultural identity and potential mastery over esoteric practices gave them a distinct and possibly feared position.
The Arrival of the Founding Families: Among these early settlers or in subsequent waves were the individuals who established the Blackwood Family and the Hedges Family.
The Blackwood Family arrived with ambitions for power and control, drawn to the valley's secrets.
The Hedges Family focused on establishing a sustainable community through agriculture and resource management.
Early Interactions and Establishment: The settlers established themselves, claimed land, and began building the foundations of Nocturnis. Early interactions between different groups occurred.
An Age of Innocence (Briefly?): The new settlers were largely unaware of the deeper history and potential dangers of the valley.
The First Shadows (Human Influence): As the Blackwood and Hedges families gained prominence and Zim artifacts were uncovered, the seeds of human corruption began to take hold.
Aztar Interactions (1700s): The Aztar observed the arrival of European settlers with apprehension. During the French and Indian Wars (mid-18th century), some Aztar formed strategic alliances with certain French families, leading to intermarriage and mixed-heritage lineages with unique insights.
IV. The Rise of Corruption - Mid-1700s - 1960s
Over decades, the influence of the Blackwood and Hedges families solidified, leading to increasing tensions and subtle corruption.
Blackwood Ascendancy: The Blackwoods accumulated power through resource control and exploitation of Zim technology, with rumors of dark pacts.
Hedges Consolidation: The Hedges focused on building essential infrastructure through agriculture (crop production, coffee, sugar), herbal cultivation and parlors, food distribution (Hedges Grocery Store Chain, Circle H Convenience Stores), water works, waste management, and the liquor industry (breweries & wineries). Their immense, quiet power lay in controlling sustenance, but they often faced manipulation from the Blackwoods.
The Unearthing of the Old: Zim artifacts continued to be unearthed, leading to advancements and dangers, fueling the city's underbelly. Twisted Technologies like Aetheric Devices, Bio-Mechanical Augmentations, Dimensional Communication Devices, Soul Engines, and Memory Implants began to appear.
The Whispers from Beyond: The thinning veil led to strange occurrences and minor Zimralan incursions.
The Boom and Bust of Fortune's Folly (1865-1866): A brief but intense oil boom west of Nocturnis created a lawless boomtown. While short-lived, it laid the foundation for the fortunes of the future elite ("Cosmic Apocalypse" families) and the rise of the city's criminal underworld. The "Old Fields" district became a lasting scar. Families associated with the future "Tiger Force Shadow Saga" were also impacted.
The Late 19th Century: Consolidating Power (1870s - 1890s): The families who profited from Fortune's Folly solidified control.
The Sterling Family: Rose as bankers and masters of modern infrastructure (communication, transportation, power), leveraging their foundational trade and logistics networks (caravans and riverboats, including trade into Crater Lake). They controlled communication networks (telegraph/telephone lines, radio/broadcasting), power generation and distribution, advanced transportation hubs (public transit, central warehousing), toll bridges/tunnels/gates, and specialized construction materials/major development financing.
The De Costa Family: Backed by the Italian Mafia, gained control of construction and raw materials (rock quarries). They employed European masons and engineers for skilled work. The Italian Mafia families ("The Cristallo Syndicate," "The Zaffiro Crew," "The Rubini Family") provided enforcement and controlled the illicit gem trade.
The Chinese Tongs: Became the Sterlings' covert arm, providing discreet enforcement and an invaluable information network, their loyalty stemming from the Sterlings' role in their initial establishment in Nocturnis (mid-to-late 19th century). They operated their own dens and coveted the Hedges' herbal parlors.
The Gemstone Guild: Managed the legitimate (though secretive) precious stone trade, comprised of English-surnamed families (Jewell, Cutter, Goldsmith, Diamond, Stone).
The Crimson Masquerades: Became a symbol of the decadent elite, hosted by the Blackwoods and other wealthy families, with whispers of dark rituals and spectral guests.
Supernatural Undercurrents: Necromancers practiced dark arts among slave traders in the Serpent's Hook. Spirit creatures stalked settlers in the outskirts of the Haunted Wood. Figures like a Sherlock Holmes-esque detective and a Count Dracula-like figure appeared, blurring the lines between reality and legend.
The Roaring Twenties: Shadows in the Industrial Age: Industrial growth masked a deeper occult underbelly. The Serpent's Hook, a sprawling waterfront district, became a haven for a sinister cult reminiscent of "The Horror at Red Hook," engaging in bizarre rituals and the worship of malevolent entities, with a weary investigator uncovering their terrifying supernatural reality.
The Scars of Global Conflict (Early 20th Century - 1945): The horrors of World War I and World War II left their indelible marks on Nocturnis as well. Returning veterans brought home not only physical wounds but also deep psychological trauma from the unprecedented industrial scale of warfare and the sheer brutality witnessed. World War II and its aftermath (1939 - 1960s) saw war bring disruption and potential exploitation of unusual valley resources. The "G-Men" and other shadowy agencies took a greater interest. Occult activity continued.
V. The Vietnam Era and the Dawn of the Shadow Saga (1965 - 1975)
Even before its official establishment as a CIA front in 1965, Tiger Transit's precursor or early iterations in Nocturnis were involved in the logistical machinery supporting the burgeoning conflict in Southeast Asia, transporting troops and equipment during the build-up to war, using its import/export network as a cover.
The Vietnam War era brought not only personal traumas to returning veterans but also the potential for their wartime enemies to follow them home. Families associated with the future "Tiger Force Shadow Saga" were deeply affected as their family members returned from the horrors they witnessed and fought in.
Infiltration by Enemy Agents: Operatives or individuals connected to the forces the "Tiger Force" fought in Vietnam, such as the Tcho-Tcho sorcerer Rin (a village shaman from Cambodia), infiltrated Nocturnis, seeking revenge or to further sinister agendas. Other characters like Lieutenant Jatczak (a special forces officer), Beo (a Vietnamese villager allied with Americans), and Major Dyer (an American officer with knowledge of what lies beneath the hilltop village) also played roles.
The Awakening of Local Entities: Entities or malevolent forces stirred by the war were drawn to Nocturnis, manifesting in the city and preying on the vulnerable.
Tiger Transit as a Covert Hub (1965 onwards): Tiger Transit established its import/export office in Nocturnis as a front for the CIA and a nascent Delta Green-like organization. It served as a crucial logistical hub for covert operations, including the transportation of sensitive materials, clandestine personnel, and unusual artifacts or entities. These operations were "black ops," operating outside official channels with deniability and secrecy.

VIII. The Mid-1970s and The Enduring "Tiger Force Shadow Saga" (Post-1975)
The Fall of Saigon and Sanctuary (1975): Following the collapse of South Vietnam, Tcho-Tcho individuals or communities, potentially including those connected to Rin, were evacuated and granted sanctuary in Nocturnis, introducing a new occult element to the city. The Ether Dragons, controlling multiverse portals, might have played a role in this evacuation, mirroring their aid to the Troll world escaping to Zimrala.
The Legacy of the Supernatural: The experiences of the original "Tiger Force" members in Vietnam, their encounters with entities like the Weaver Woman, and the infiltration of their enemies established a precedent for dealing with the unnatural. Tiger Force, or a successor organization born from their experiences (operating within Tiger Transit's "black ops" framework), became a specialized unit dealing with paranormal threats that extend beyond the Vietnam War.
A Secret History: This marked the beginning of the "Tiger Force Shadow Saga" campaign, a hidden history of supernatural conflict interwoven with real-world events. This saga would span different eras and global conflicts (such as Desert Shield and Desert Storm, involving the children of the original Tiger Force members), introducing new supernatural entities, mysteries, and historical contexts.
Lingering Conflicts and Evolving Operations: The catastrophic events of 1970-1971 and the subsequent arrival of new, potentially volatile elements left a lasting impact on Nocturnis. The powerful families of Nocturnis, who "create, control, and eventually it all explodes or implodes," continued to navigate this evolving landscape, seeking to maintain their control even amidst cosmic and earthly upheavals, as the "Tiger Force Shadow Saga" continued its long and dangerous journey into the unknown.
What's Next for Nocturnis?
This is just the beginning of our journey into the heart of Nocturnis. As I continue to refine my decades-long vision, drawing on the influences of great creators like Greg Stafford and Ken St. Andre, I'll be sharing more updates, new lore, and deeper dives into the terrifying tapestry of this city.
Stay tuned, keep your wits about you, and prepare to face the horrors that await.
Yours, Captain Hedges, the Tyger Boss of Zimrala
