Bayou Tuesday Update: Heading Down to The Lovewell Center

Hey everyone, I am taking this Bayou Tuesday off from our regular programming today. Instead of my usual creative writing updates, I am heading down to downtown Shreveport to visit The Lovewell Center. I’ve got a busy morning ahead of me—I need to get some essential shopping done at the stores and take care of my weekly laundry.

Because this community is such a massive part of my life, I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about what makes this place so special while I am away from the keyboard.

The Lovewell Center is a core program operated by The Hub: Urban Ministries right here in Shreveport, Louisiana. It is a place dedicated to giving individuals experiencing homelessness and material poverty access to a completely restored life. But what makes it incredible is that it completely rejects traditional, dependency-based charity models. Instead of handing out standard, conditional handouts that can often strip away a person's dignity, The Lovewell Center operates on an empowering, membership-based resource model. This structure encourages active participation, personal responsibility, and real, long-term personal growth.

As a member, you don’t just walk in and ask for things. Instead, members earn credits by actively attending life-skills classes, participating in structured mentorship programs, and joining recovery groups. These earned credits are then used as a dignified currency within the center's specialized resource stores. It allows you to buy exactly what you need while building a solid foundation to permanently move out of poverty.

The entire ministry is built on The Four Pillars: Rescue, Relationship, Resources, and Recovery. You can see this lived out through their distinct incentive stores:

  • Eatwell: Where members can spend credits to access consistent, quality groceries and pantry staples to keep their kitchens stocked.

  • Dresswell: The clothing store packed with essential apparel, jackets, and daily wear. In fact, most of the clothes I wear on a daily basis come straight from these racks!

  • Smellwell: A dignified space providing personal hygiene products, toiletries, and crucial access to clean shower facilities and public laundry services.

While the flagship hub serves the entire Shreveport-Bossier City region from Cotton Street, the impact of this model has grown significantly over the years. The Lovewell Center has expanded its reach with partnering locations operating in Lafayette, Louisiana; Houston, Texas; and even out west through a ministry partnership in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The story of how I went from sleeping right on the concrete in front of those very doors back in 2015 to graduating the VIP program and becoming a Legacy Member is a deeply personal one. There is a lot to tell, and we are going to build that narrative out together piece by piece in the coming weeks. ME SLEEPING IN  FRONT OF THESE DOORS PICTURED BELOW!
