History & Founding Families
The history of Nocturnis is a tapestry woven with the ambitions, fears, and dark secrets of its inhabitants, particularly its influential families.
I am currently working on a Nocturnis Fantasy Setting starting in the early 1500s (to be posted later within this timeline).
Early Settlement (Early-to-Mid 1700s)
The valley saw a trickle, then a steady stream, of individuals venturing into what would become Nocturnis. The historical records are fragmented, but prevailing theories suggest:
Displaced Acadian Families: Seeking refuge after turmoil in the north, carrying their French heritage and resilience.
Religious Groups Fleeing Persecution: Seeking solitude to practice their beliefs undisturbed, their fervor potentially stirring older things.
Hardened Frontiersmen and Trappers: Drawn by untouched wilderness and furs, tested against the environment and "unconventional inhabitants."
Fortune Seekers with Darker Intentions: Individuals lured by arcane energies or forgotten lore supposedly dormant within the valley's depths.
The Blackwood Family: Architects of Corruption
One of the two primary pillars upon which Nocturnis was built. The Blackwoods are associated with the more established, traditional, and darker aspects of the city. Their legacy is deeply woven into the city's fabric, controlling specific districts, industries, and supernatural elements. They represent exploitation and control through illicit means, with a history of money laundering and criminal enterprises.
The Hedges Family: Cultivators of Sustenance and Infrastructure
The other foundational lineage, arriving with a fundamentally different vision. They focused on cultivating the land and establishing essential foundations for a thriving community.
Agricultural Visionaries: They brought diverse crops (coffee beans, corn, wheat, rye, barley, oats) and invested in ingenious irrigation systems from the river.
Self-Sufficiency & Infrastructure: Their initial focus was a self-sustaining farm, evolving into a winery, coffee company, and granary. They later invested in fresh water systems and food distribution networks for the city.
Dominance in Food Industry (by 1970s): By the 1970s, they controlled the Hedges Grocery Store Chain and Circle H Convenience Stores.
Quiet Power: Unlike the overtly corrupt Blackwoods, the Hedges wield subtle but immense power through their control over the city's food supply. In times of scarcity, they can effectively "starve the city to death" or act as its lifeline.
The Sterling Family: Masters of Mercantile Trade
A prominent mercantile dynasty, instrumental in the flow of goods.
Caravan Masters: They operate extensive caravan networks that bring vital goods into Nocturnis from the outside world.
Riverine Trade: They command a fleet of riverboats, crucial for internal and external trade. Their boats frequent the city's harbors and travel up and down the river, extending into and out of Crater Lake, which functions as a significant hub for Sterling trade.
The De La Cruz Family: Zealots Against Cosmic Horror
A Spanish expedition that arrived in the 16th/17th century, driven by zealous faith. They were not merely settlers but crusaders who stumbled upon profound and terrifying phenomena, interpreting them through a religious worldview.
The Whispers from the Earth: Pervasive psychic resonance from ley lines, perceived as "Diablo's Tongue" or "Voices of the Damned."
The Verdant Maw of the Haunted Wood: The sentient, hostile forest, perceived as "El Bosque Maldito" (The Cursed Forest).
The Deep Slumberer's Influence: The oppressive presence of the entity beneath Mount Nocturnis, perceived as a "Demonio de la MontaƱa" (Mountain Demon) or "Gigante Pagano" (Pagan Giant).
The Distorted Reflections: Fleeting, impossible glimpses of other realities near interdimensional gateways, perceived as "Visiones del Infierno" (Visions of Hell) or "Espejos del Demonio" (Mirrors of the Demon).
The Corrupted Water: Subtly mind-altering water from the river/lake, perceived as "Aguas Embrujadas" (Haunted Waters) or "Aguas del Pecado" (Waters of Sin).
These encounters solidified their belief that Nocturnis was a battleground between God and the Devil, fueling their centuries-long, secret crusade.
French Creole Families: A Unique Cultural Thread
Migrating from Louisiana, these families bring a distinct blend of French, African, and Caribbean influences.
Cultural Fabric: They introduce rich traditions, culinary arts, unique dialect, and vibrant folklore.
Legends and Practices: Their legends focus on:
Loup-Garous (Werewolves): A creature deeply rooted in Louisiana folklore.
Voodoo and Hoodoo: Practices offering both protection and curses.
Ghosts and Hauntings: Distinct spectral activity, linked to historical tragedies or family curses.
Bayou Spirits: Entities tied to the swampy, mist-shrouded areas of Nocturnis.
Social Position: Their unique cultural identity and potential mastery over esoteric practices give them a distinct and possibly feared position, separate from other power structures.
Native American Presence
a Nestled high in the surrounding mountains, a Native American village exists, these are the Azatar an indegenions peoples that came her and settled the valley around 11,000 B.C. Their presence speaks of a long-standing connection to this land, a wisdom and understanding of its powers – both benevolent and malevolent – that the newcomers could only begin to comprehend. Their interactions with early settlers are a crucial part of the valley's history.
A Historical Account: Fortune's Folly and the Genesis of Nocturnis's Shadow the Oil Boom of 1865-1866 and its Enduring Impact on Nocturnis
The Oil Boom of 1865-1866 and its Enduring Impact on Nocturnis
I. Introduction: The Ghost of Fortune's Folly
Image of Present-day 6-12-2025 Fortune's Folly
Nestled within the sprawling, rain-slicked concrete of modern Nocturnis lies a forgotten scar – the district colloquially known as "The Folly," or simply "The Old Fields." Its crumbling foundations and skeletal derricks stand as a stark monument to a forgotten chapter, a mere blink in time over a century ago, yet one that irrevocably cast the die for the city's future. This document aims to chronicle the meteoric rise and catastrophic fall of "Fortune's Folly," the boomtown that birthed the fortunes and the shadows that define Nocturnis in the 1970s.
II. The Genesis of Greed: The Black Gold Strike of 1865
In January of 1865, a seismic shift occurred in the sparsely populated marshlands and low hills just west of what would eventually become the heart of Nocturnis. The "Blackwater Well," drilled by a consortium of ambitious, often ruthless, prospectors, struck an unprecedented vein of crude. Reports, likely exaggerated but rooted in truth, claimed a daily yield of 250 barrels of oil. This discovery ignited a "general stampede to the area," drawing in a desperate, hopeful, and often lawless tide of humanity from across the continent.
III. The Fever Dream: The Rise of Fortune's Folly (May - September 1865)
The subsequent months witnessed a spectacle of raw, unchecked capitalism and human desperation. By May of 1865, a makeshift city, optimistically christened "Fortune's Folly," began to materialize around the gushing wells. This was no planned settlement; it was a chaotic organism of hastily erected shanties, saloons, and supply stores.
The growth was staggering. By September of 1865, a mere four months after its inception, Fortune's Folly boasted an estimated population of 15,000 inhabitants. It was a place of wild extremes:
Economic Hub: Two banks, operating with dubious oversight, handled the torrent of cash.
Temporary Luxuries: Over 50 hotels (ranging from opulent, if crude, establishments to glorified flophouses) sprang up to accommodate the endless stream of speculators, laborers, and opportunists.
Communication Nexus: Its post office, a testament to the sheer volume of correspondence and financial transactions, was reputedly the 3^{rd} largest in the entire region, a staggering feat for such a nascent settlement.
Fortune's Folly was a microcosm of the American frontier spirit, distilled into its most potent and dangerous form. Fortunes were made and lost on the turn of a card, and the rule of law was often supplanted by the rule of the gun.
IV. The Inevitable Implosion: January 1866
The boom, however, was built on a foundation as unstable as the marshland it occupied. The oil veins, though initially prolific, were finite and rapidly depleted. By January of 1866, a mere year after the first gusher, the wells began to run dry. The "stampede" reversed course with equal, if not greater, speed. Fortune's Folly, once a pulsating hive of activity, became a deserted village almost overnight. Businesses shuttered, buildings were abandoned, and the population vanished, leaving behind only the ghosts of ambition and the skeletal remains of a city that never truly took root.
V. The Enduring Legacy in 1970s Nocturnis
The brief, violent life of Fortune's Folly is not merely a historical footnote; it is the very bedrock upon which modern Nocturnis was built, and its shadows still stretch long across the city's grimy streets in the 1970s.
The Physical Scar: "The Old Fields" District: The ruins of Fortune's Folly were eventually subsumed by Nocturnis's outward sprawl. Today, "The Old Fields" is a blighted, forgotten district – a maze of crumbling brick, rusted metal, and overgrown lots where once-grand structures stood. It is a haven for the desperate, the criminal, and those seeking to disappear. Its perpetual decay serves as a grim reminder of the city's foundational greed.
The Architects of Power: The "Cosmic Apocalypse" Families: The true beneficiaries of Fortune's Folly were not the thousands who flocked there, but a select few. The ancestors of the powerful, often unseen, families who now pull the strings of Nocturnis (the very same who speak of "creating, controlling, and imploding" grand schemes) were the ones who moved with foresight and ruthlessness. They secured vast land holdings, monopolized the most productive wells, and, crucially, diversified their wealth before the inevitable bust. Their immense, untraceable fortunes, which fund their current empires and influence every facet of Nocturnis life, were forged in the chaotic crucible of Fortune's Folly. The "implosion" of the boomtown was merely a controlled demolition for them, clearing the way for their next grand design.
The Echoes of the "Tiger Force Shadow Saga" Families: While not the primary beneficiaries, many ancestors of the "Tiger Force Shadow Saga" families would have been caught in the undertow of Fortune's Folly. They might have been:
The Exploited Laborers: Drawn by the promise of work, they endured brutal conditions and were left destitute when the boom collapsed, leaving a legacy of hardship and resilience.
The Dispossessed: Small landowners whose property was forcibly acquired or swindled during the land rush.
The Honest Few: Lawmen or citizens who witnessed the rampant corruption and injustice, instilling a deep-seated cynicism or a quiet, burning desire for justice that has passed down through generations.
VI. Conclusion: A City Forged in Greed
Fortune's Folly was more than just an oil town; it was a crucible. Its brief, intense existence laid the foundation for Nocturnis's economic power, its deeply ingrained corruption, and its pervasive sense of cynicism. The wealth generated there continues to fuel the city's elite, while the abandoned ruins serve as a stark reminder of the human cost. In the neo-noir landscape of 1970s Nocturnis, the ghost of Fortune's Folly is not just a historical curiosity; it is a living, breathing part of the city's dark soul, influencing every deal, every crime, and every desperate struggle for survival.
This next section details the Rise of the Casinos
The Shifting Sands of Fortune: A History of Gambling in Nocturnis
The pursuit of fortune has always been a subtle undercurrent in Nocturnis, long before it became an overt, legalized industry. The city's unique position, drawing various powerful families and shadowy organizations, created a natural demand for games of chance.
The Illicit Beginnings (Pre-1931):
- 1906: The Golden Gate Casino (Formerly Hotel Nocturnis) founded by the Goldman Family: The Goldman Family established the very first major gambling establishment in Nocturnis, initially disguised as the opulent "Hotel Nocturnis." While gambling was not yet formally legalized across the city-state, the Goldman's enterprise likely operated in a grey area, perhaps tolerated by influential local figures, catering to the city's elite and those willing to overlook strictures. It represents the oldest continuously operating casino, a testament to the Goldman's enduring presence and pioneering spirit in the city's nascent vice economy.
- 1926: The Cal Neva Casino (Crater Lake): Years later, in 1926, a wealthy businessman from San Francisco, sensing the illicit but lucrative opportunities, established the Cal Neva Casino. Located not far from the main settlement along the pristine shores of Crater Lake, it offered a more secluded, perhaps more exclusive, gambling experience away from the direct gaze of city authorities. This establishment also operated outside the bounds of formal legality, relying on its remote location and influential clientele.
The Turning Point: Legalization in 1931:
The pervasive, yet unregulated, gambling across Nocturnis created a pressure point for change. The key moment arrived in 1931, when the powerful Sterling Family, through their immense financial leverage and control over infrastructure, successfully pushed for the legalization of gambling throughout the city-state of Nocturnis. This monumental shift occurred after the Blackwood Family and other unnamed influential entities finally conceded to the Sterling's undeniable economic and political sway.
This legalization ushered in a new era of overt, city-sanctioned entertainment, transforming Nocturnis's economic landscape.
The Rise of the Boardwalk Casinos (Post-1931):
With legalization, the city's vibrant Boardwalk became the prime location for Nocturnis's first officially sanctioned casinos, solidifying its reputation as a hub of entertainment and vice.
- 1931: The Silver Star Casino (Opened by the Sterling Family): Immediately capitalizing on their legislative victory, the Sterling Family, the city's bankers and infrastructure barons, opened the opulent Silver Star Casino. Its name reflected their family's wealth and their desire for a high-class, legitimate gambling enterprise.
- 1931: The Jade Dragon Palace (Opened by the Jade Dragon Crime Boss): Not to be outdone, the Jade Dragon Crime Boss, leader of the Tongs (and sponsored by the Sterling Family in other ventures), established the Jade Dragon Palace. This casino instantly became a landmark on the Boardwalk, blending exotic allure with the subtle, yet undeniable, power of the Tongs. Its presence highlighted the complex, often intertwined, relationships between "legitimate" business and the city's criminal underworld.
- 1932: The Obsidian Palace Hotel and Casino (Established by the Blackwood Family): A year after the initial rush, the Blackwood Family, masters of the criminal underworld and known for their secretive and intelligent operations, established their own significant foothold on the Boardwalk with the Obsidian Palace Hotel and Casino. True to their name, the "Obsidian Palace" would have been a sleek, formidable, and perhaps subtly intimidating establishment, quickly becoming a major player in the newly legalized gambling scene. Its opening further intensified the competition and solidified the Boardwalk as the undisputed heart of Nocturnis's legal fortunes.
Nocturnis Timeline: Major Events Reimagined (1970-1980)
This section details significant historical events from the real world, reinterpreted as occurrences within the unique and unsettling history of Nocturnis.
Major Events of 1970 in Nocturnis
January 1: The Unwinding Begins: Instead of the Unix Time Epoch, this date marks the widely whispered "Beginning of the Unwinding" – a subtle but pervasive sense of temporal distortion and unreality that begins to affect Nocturnis. Clocks run erratically, memories become unreliable, and a general feeling that the threads of time are loosening takes hold. Some blame ancient rituals, others the proximity of Mount Nocturnis.
January 2 & 5: The Tremors of the Serpent Docks: Instead of the Yunnan/Tonghai earthquakes, Nocturnis experiences a series of violent tremors centered around the Wadjet's Serpent Docks. Buildings along the waterfront crumble, fissures open in the streets, and monstrous creatures from the deep are briefly exposed before retreating into the darkness. The Hedges family's water supply lines are disrupted, leading to city-wide shortages.
January 3 & 9: Blackwood's Environmental Edict: Mayor Theron Blackwood, under pressure from concerned (or perhaps bribed) citizens after the Serpent Dock tremors, signs the "Nocturnis Reclamation and Preservation Act." While ostensibly for environmental protection, many suspect it's a thinly veiled land grab by the Blackwood family in the damaged districts.
January 4: The Silent Chord: The legendary (and possibly monstrous) band "The Shadowed Six" hold their final, unannounced recording session at a hidden studio beneath the Bourbon Ruins. The music they create is said to be so unsettling it can induce nightmares in those who later hear it. The master tapes vanish without a trace.
January 10: The Glimmering Pavilion Opens: The Blackwood family unveils the "Nocturnis Wonders Preview Center" near the base of Mount Nocturnis. It promises glimpses of future "attractions" tied to the mountain's mysteries and potential otherworldly connections, drawing both curious onlookers and wary investigators.
January 12 & 15: The UnderCity Truce Ends: A fragile truce between the Ratling gangs of the Uruk's Shadowed Slums and the degenerate cults dwelling in the deeper UnderCity collapses. Violent skirmishes break out in the tunnels, spilling into the surface streets and causing widespread panic.
January 20: The Shadow Liner Takes Flight: The first commercially scheduled "Shadow Liner," a bizarre airship powered by an unknown (possibly ether-derived) technology, takes its maiden voyage from a heavily guarded Blackwood-owned airfield on the outskirts of the city. Its destination is unknown, fueling speculation about the city's off-world connections.
January 25: The Premiere of "Crimson Confessions": A controversial and darkly comedic film, "Crimson Confessions," directed by a reclusive auteur rumored to have ties to the city's occult underground, premieres at a dilapidated theater in the Degenerate Quarter. Its themes of societal decay and monstrous desires deeply unsettle audiences.
February 8: The Tar Spill of Widow's Mire: A catastrophic accident involving a Hedges-owned transport spills a massive amount of viscous, black tar into the Voidspire Bog's Widow's Mire. Strange, tar-coated creatures emerge from the depths, and the already treacherous bog becomes even more hazardous.
April 9 & 10: The Silence Falls: The influential (and possibly sanity-blasted) artist collective known as "The Discordant Harmony" publicly announces their disbandment, leaving behind a legacy of unsettling sculptures and cacophonous sound installations that continue to plague the city's perception of reality.
April 13 & 17: The Incident at the Obsidian Academy: A critical magical experiment at the Obsidian Academy goes horribly wrong, resulting in a localized temporal anomaly and the temporary disappearance of several students and faculty. Their eventual, often altered, return fuels rumors of forbidden knowledge and dangerous practices within the academy walls.
April 22: Nocturnis Observance Day: Inspired by events in the outside world, a small group of concerned citizens organizes the first "Nocturnis Observance Day," a largely ignored attempt to raise awareness about the city's strange and often dangerous environment.
May 3 & 4: The Protests at Blackwood Plaza: Following a particularly brutal crackdown by the G-Men on an UnderCity gathering, protests erupt in Blackwood Plaza. The City Watch, under Blackwood's control, violently disperses the demonstrators, leading to injuries and further fueling anti-establishment sentiment.
June 12 & 17 & 18: The Nocturnis Brawl: The final matches of the Nocturnis Wrestling League season reach a fever pitch, culminating in a chaotic and brutal championship brawl rumored to involve supernatural interference and the direct manipulation of the Blackwood family.
August 24: The Sterling Alchemical Lab Incident: A mysterious explosion rocks the Sterling Alchemical Laboratory, a research facility with suspected ties to both the Hedges family's more esoteric projects and potentially illicit occult practices. The official explanation is a "gas leak," but rumors of volatile experiments and monstrous byproducts persist.
September 7 & 8 & 10: The Skyjackings of the Lost Pilgrims: A series of bizarre skyjackings target airships traveling to and from Nocturnis. The perpetrators and their motives remain unknown, and the vanished vessels only add to the city's growing sense of unease and isolation.
September 18: The Silence of the String Bender: The enigmatic musician known only as "String Bender," whose haunting melodies were said to subtly influence the city's mood, mysteriously disappears, leaving behind only his strangely warped instruments.
October 5 & 9 & 10 & 16 & 17: The Cross Disappearance and the Labor Leader's Fate: A visiting diplomat from a neighboring (and equally strange) nation, Jasper Cross, vanishes without a trace from his heavily guarded Blackwood-owned residence, sparking a city-wide panic. Days later, a prominent labor leader organizing against the Hedges family's exploitative practices, Pierre Lamont, is found dead under mysterious circumstances in the Degenerate Quarter.
November 8 & 11 & 12 & 13 & 14: The Great Mire Flood: A catastrophic storm, far exceeding typical Nocturnis weather, unleashes unprecedented flooding in the Voidspire Bog. December 2 & 5 & 6 & 14: The Formation of the Obsidian Guard: In response to the escalating chaos and the Cross disappearance, Mayor Blackwood officially establishes the "Obsidian Guard," a heavily armed and secretive force drawn from the ranks of the City Watch and rumored to include individuals with unsettling abilities and allegiances.
December 13 & 15 & 16: The Whispers from Below: Unexplained seismic activity deep beneath Mount Nocturnis is detected by rudimentary city sensors. Strange, low-frequency vibrations and unsettling whispers seem to emanate from the mountain's depths, fueling ancient fears of what lies dormant within.
