The Birth of Zimrala (March 22, 2022)

The Birth of Zimrala (March 22, 2022)

The Setting: While the corporate world of 5E was reeling from the OGL betrayal, a different fire was being stoked. On March 22, 2022, Steven Crompton and Ken St. Andre launched the Monsterary of Zimrala (MoZ) Kickstarter. The goal was $22,222, but the community answered with over $31,000, proving that independence has a market.

The Stakeholder's Move: As part of this legendary roster—alongside names like Bear Peters, Liz Danforth, and Stefan Jones—I didn't just contribute words. I secured the future of my own narrative. During this campaign, I purchased the Northwest islands at $25 a piece.

This was the strategic birth of the Tygerian Isles. While the MoZ was introducing 111 unique creatures to the world, I was anchoring the Tygerians (my evolved Tigermen) into their own sovereign archipelago. I wasn't just a backer; I was a founder of a new territory in the Northwest.

The Call of the Trollgod: The Secret Origin of the Tygerian Isles

By Arthur Earl C. Hedges Jr. Shreveport, Louisiana

The Hook: The Email That Changed Everything

It started with a ping in my inbox that cut through the noise of the corporate world. For years, I had been watching the "Big Forge" of the industry—the Hasbros and the Wizards of the Coast—slowly tightening their grip on the hobbies we love. But on this morning, I received an email directly from the desk of Ken St. Andre, the legendary creator of Tunnels & Trolls and Monsters! Monsters!.

Ken didn't send a marketing blast. He sent a call to arms. He spoke about his upcoming project with Steven Crompton, a massive fantasy bestiary and world-setting called the Monsterary of Zimrala (MoZ). He told me that this wasn't just another book; it was a gateway to a whole new world that they were building from the ground up—a world that didn't answer to the corporate gatekeepers. He offered me a seat at the table, a chance to help him populate this new wild frontier with the legends I had been carrying in my head for years.

Section 1: The OGL Betrayal and the Need for Sanctuary

To understand why Ken’s email felt like a lifeline, you have to look at the "scorched earth" policy being enacted by Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast at that very moment. They were attempting to "deauthorize" the Open Game License (OGL 1.0a) and the SRD (System Reference Document) frameworks—the very foundations of the independent gaming industry. They wanted to cancel the freedom of creators to build on open systems and force every imagination into a taxed, corporate-controlled sandbox.

I had already lost the Star Trek Voyage Earl, the Earl of Borg, and the Galaxy Sci-Fi Store websites to the 2016 Star Trek lockdowns. I was tired of building on shifting corporate sand. When Ken reached out, I saw my chance to build on granite. By joining the Zimrala project, I was choosing a partnership built on mutual respect and creative sovereignty.

Section 2: The Kickstarter and the $240 Investment

The Kickstarter for the MoZ officially launched on March 22, 2022. It was a grassroots powerhouse, aimed at $22,222 and backed by over 400 people who were hungry for something real. But while others were just buying a book, I was buying sovereignty.

I. The $65 Biological Anchor (The Tigermen-to-Tygerians Pivot)

Ken had a concept for the Tigermen of Zimrala, a fierce and ancient kindred. I knew immediately that these were the people I had been searching for to anchor my Tiger Force Shadow Saga.

I paid a direct $65 dollars to Ken and Steve to include the Tigermen in the Monsterary. This wasn't a donation; it was a "biological anchor." This investment finalized their status in the MoZ lore, but it also gave me the creative leverage to evolve them. Under my pen, they didn't stay as generic monsters. They became the Tygerians—a noble, resilient, and independent race of warrior-poets who lived by a code of strength and ancient honor. That $65 was the price of their birth in the Zimralan annals.

II. The $175 Land Grant (Seven Islands at $25 a Piece)

A people need a home. I looked at the vast, empty Northwest on Steve Crompton’s master map and I saw a cluster of islands that were isolated, rugged, and strategically perfect.

I purchased each of those seven islands at $25 a piece, totaling a $175 investment. This was my "Land Grant." By paying for the real estate, I secured the right to name them and define their history. While Steve Crompton handled the professional cartography and the actual design of the map, I provided the Nomenclature of the Northwest.

I named them The Tygerian Isles. I gave life to the names you see on the map:

  • Achrox: The massive, mountainous heart of the culture.

  • New Tuslan: The refuge for those escaping the corporate "commandments."

  • Tygeria: The sovereign forge where the ancient secrets are kept.

  • Thrivaldi, Thrasir, Spirerock, and Thimblethumb: The four sentinel watchtowers that protect the archipelago from all vectors.

Section 3: The Northwest Covenant

Because of that email and that Kickstarter, the Northwest part of Zimrala is now a territory that answers to the Earl of Hedges. When you look at that map, you aren't just looking at fantasy geography. You are looking at a Covenant of Independence.

  • The Tygerians (my $65 kindred) rule these isles.

  • The Tiger Force (my original group) operates from Port Chrox.

  • The Tygerian Isles (my seven $25 islands) are the stage for the Tiger Force Shadow Saga.

By collaborating with Ken and Steve, I ensured that my "Product Identity" is baked into the very bedrock of the world. No corporate "deauthorization" can take Achrox away from me. No 2,000% fee hike can reach into the sentinel towers of Thrasir. We built this on the Monsters! Monsters! framework—a system born of the community, for the community.

Conclusion: The Future is Sovereign

As I write this today, March 26, 2022, I am no longer just a "fan." I am a creator with a map, a people, and a purpose. Ken St. Andre gave me the opportunity, Steve Crompton gave me the visual canvas, and I provided the spirit and the investment to make it real.

The corporate giants can have their fenced-in stars and their canceled licenses. I’ll be here in the Northwest, among the Tygerians, watching the horizon from the peaks of Spirerock. The forge is lit, the land is bought, and the adventure has truly begun. The Tiger Force Shadow Saga is home.
