MIDWEEK MUSINGS FOR 9/23/2026 EARTERN LANDS UPDATE

Midweek Musings: Exploring the Eastern Hawthorne Valley

Title: Into the Eastern Valley: A Traveler’s Guide to Hawthorne and Beyond

Introduction

The Hook: Greetings, fellow monsters of the Urland Multiverse! Today’s Midweek Musings is taking us to the eastern part of Hawthorne Valley, where the mist hangs heavy and the ancient trails hold secrets best left undisturbed. The Problem: Navigating the shifting terrain and wild borders of the eastern valley can spell doom for the unprepared traveler. The Solution/Promise: Read on to discover what lies hidden beneath the canopy in this uncharted stretch of the multiverse.

The eastern fringes of Hawthorne Valley present a unique and deadly challenge to anyone daring to step off the beaten western paths. The journey into Hawthorne Valley starts long before you reach the eastern city itself. Approaching from the greater Bodeleaf County means navigating a relentless gauntlet of rugged terrain, ancient ruins, and monstrous hazards. Travelers must choose their path carefully, as the valley is shielded by the treacherous Rocky Crags to the north and the deep, murky waters of Viper Lake to the west.

Section 1: The Borderlands of Hawthorne Crossing into this territory means leaving the safety of known roads. If you take the southern route through the Marshland Hollows, you will find the air growing stagnant and thick. Watch your footing in this region, as the local frog-men patrols are highly territorial, wielding spears and using the murky bog water to camouflage their movements. To the north, the Bodeleaf Forest offers a different kind of threat. Travelers passing near the old Arrth Crossing or the sprawling canopy of Ashwood Meadows must keep their voices low. A towering giant is known to inhabit the forest, sitting quietly among the massive tree trunks, observing those who pass by.

Further along the path, Boghorn Keep and Cashel Far stand as ancient stone remnants of past civilizations. Use these landmarks for navigation, but do not linger.

Section 2: The Fenland Caves and the Goddess of Decay To the west, perched menacingly upon the ancient stone columns of the Fenland Caves, lies a threat that transcends mere wildlife. This is the domain of the Ancient Black Dragon—the Goddess of Death, Destruction, and Decay. She is a divine terror of the Urland Multiverse, demanding absolute reverence from any who enter Bodeleaf County.

Her physical avatar possesses apocalyptic strength. Drawing upon ancient draconic lineages, her core vitality is immense (Pathfinder base Constitution 25, Hit Points 337). Translated into our Monsters! Monsters! 2.7 mechanics, taking her Constitution plus her Hit Points multiplied by 25, she commands a staggering Monster Rating (MR) of 8450.

Ancient Black Dragon Goddess Stats (M!M! 2.7):

Monster Rating (MR): 8450 (Physical Avatar)

Deadliness Rating (DR): 9

Divine Status: As a true Goddess, her spiritual essence is ultimately unkillable. Should her physical avatar ever be pushed to its limits, her true divine form holds a Deadliness Rating of 10 and an MR well over 10,000.

Damage Profile: All combat damage and breath weapon effects are rolled exclusively using D6s.

Monster Adeptness Skills (Translated from Pathfinder):

  • Aquatic Stealth & Swamp Camouflage: Unmatched ability to blend into the Marshland Hollows and Fenland Bogs.

  • Frightful Presence: An overwhelming aura of terror that forces morale and sanity checks for any mortal within her sightline.

  • Draconic Perception: Blindsight and darkvision that pierce through the thickest swamp fogs.

Special Abilities (Feats & Talents):

  • Vampiric Acidic Breath Weapon: A terrifying, dual-natured exhalation. A torrent of caustic black acid that dissolves armor and flesh, interwoven with dark necromantic energy that drains the life force of its victims directly into the Goddess. Even legendary wanderers who possess absolute immunity to acid and poison will still suffer the devastating, life-sapping effects of the vampiric drain.

  • Corrupt Water: She can instantly foul lakes and rivers, turning the surrounding bogs into stagnant, toxic pools.

  • Acid Pool: Her mere presence causes the ground to weep caustic residue, dealing passive D6 damage to anyone engaged in melee.

Section 3: Actionable Survival Tips Venture into the eastern valley prepared, or do not go at all. Pack light, move with a capable adventuring party, and always know your route back to safety before the sun dips below the Moonglade ridge.

  • Avoid the Fenland Caves entirely unless you are conducting a high-level divine intervention.

  • Double-check your navigation tools at Arrth Crossing before committing to the deep forest.

  • Secure your camp early, preferably far from the Abandoned Farm, which is known for unsavory nocturnal hazards and mysterious fires.

  • The only safe trail within this area is the Bodeleaf Trail, but it isn't always clearly marked. Even seasoned Tygerian Rangers seem to get lost easily, especially around Ashwood Meadows because the forest there is heavy with illusion. You need to roll an IQ Level 10 SR (Saving Roll), beating a Target Number of 100. You may get a +10 bonus to this saving roll from your Monster Adeptness skills and talents (Wilderness Lore). Failure means you are hopelessly lost in that area.

Kenneth Arr'th, The Troll Godfather (Bodeleaf Tree Troll Avatar)

Monster Rating (MR): 3000 (Calculated from Divine Base Constitution 20 + 100 Hit Points = 120. 120 x 25 = 3000) Deadliness Rating (DR): 8 Combat Dice Pool: 500D6 + 1500 (Calculated as 3000 / 6 = 500 Dice, plus 1500 adds) Damage Profile: All combat damage is rolled exclusively using D6s.

Monster Adeptness Skills:

  • Forest Awareness: Attuned to the deep woods, he cannot be caught by surprise when in a forest environment.

  • Arboreal Camouflage: A natural ability to blend perfectly into wooded environments, appearing as a mossy boulder or stump when holding still, allowing him to appear completely harmless.

  • Arboreal Acrobatics: Expert climbing and movement through the canopy and thick roots of large trees.

  • Keen Senses: Enhanced vision and scent tracking that make it incredibly difficult to ambush them in their home territory.

  • Gamemaster Character (NPC): This highly intelligent, plant-like entity is designed strictly as a Gamemaster NPC to run encounters specifically at the Arr'th Crossing location.

Special Abilities (Feats & Talents):

  • Wooden Skin ("Treeing Up"): His skin can instantly harden into thick, bark-like wood, providing immense natural armor protection against physical attacks.

  • Erupting Spikes & Rending Claws: Lethal wooden spikes can violently erupt from both hands. Treat these as large daggers that add +3D6 to his combat rolls, plus his standard damage adds. If the troll successfully strikes a target with both spiked hands in the same combat round, it tears at the flesh, dealing an additional automatic D6 of rending damage.

  • Bark and Moss Regeneration: Rapidly heals physical wounds round-by-round. This regeneration is bypassed completely by fire-based magic and mundane flames, which inflict lasting damage.

Magic & Spells:

  • Befuddling Confusion: Used to disorient strangers in the woods, the Troll God knows a potent spell to confuse his victims. He may cast it by spending 1 point of WIZ for each 1 point of INT he wants the victim to lose.

  • Tree Heal: By pressing his wooden form against the trunk of an ancient forest tree, he can draw upon the deep earth's life force to instantly restore his vitality or meld completely into the wood to escape danger.

  • Grasping Roots: He can command the underbrush and tree roots of Bodeleaf Forest to animate, bursting from the soil to grapple, crush, and immobilize his foes in thorny vines.

  • Commune with Flora: He speaks directly to the surrounding trees, moss, and foliage, using the entire forest network as a massive spy system to track intruders long before they reach his crossing.

  • Thorny Vine Whip: He can instantly conjure a long, lashing vine covered in wicked thorns to strike from a distance. Mirroring classic druidic magic, this whip deals an automatic D6 of piercing damage and allows him to forcefully drag the struck victim up to 10 feet closer to him, pulling them perfectly into range of his erupting spikes.

Combat Style: If threatened, the Troll God will try to look completely inoffensive and get close to his opponent, preferably singling out just one target. Once close enough, he will cast his Confusion spell to cripple their intellect before “treeing up” to trigger his wooden armor and attacking relentlessly with his erupting spikes. He will actively use his Thorny Vine Whip to drag any fleeing targets directly back into his deadly melee range.

Communication: He speaks Dryad, Tree Giant, and Tree Troll fluently, as well as the tongue of any community near to his domain in Bodeleaf County.

Section 4: The Eastern City of the Valley Once you safely bypass the borderland threats and cross the winding waters of The Serpent's Coil, the landscape shifts dramatically. You enter the Eastern Lands, where whispering bamboo forests and ancient stone pathways lead toward breathtaking pagoda cities. These multi-tiered settlements are built directly into the mountain falls, complete with grand torii gates and bustling wooden docks where small boats navigate the rushing river. Here, the lingering heat of the western bogs is replaced by the cool mist of the waterfalls.

The city is fiercely protected; you are just as likely to encounter heavily armored tigerIAN-warriors wielding katana blades as you are to see masked shinobi BLACK DRAgon ninjas, dropping from the pagoda roofs. Magic pulses through the area, drawn from the wizards Wu-jens and arcane practitioners who gather near the river. When negotiating passage at the eastern city docks, respect the local tiger-samurai and never draw a weapon near the torii gate.

Conclusion

The eastern reaches of Hawthorne Valley offer both breathtaking scenery and latent peril for those who tread its paths. Respect the land, stay sharp against the dangers of Bodeleaf County, and always heed the whispers of the valley.
