Remember, Recognize, Resist: Rejecting the Pseudo-Saviors of This World
Introduction
Have you ever looked at a commercial advertisement for a fitness program or an acne treatment? They always show an undeniable "before and after" picture. The contrast is sharp, clear, and dramatic.
Our lives in Christ are meant to show that exact same contrast. In the final stretch of his first letter (1 John 5:18–21), John hits on three major, unshakeable facts that define our spiritual transformation. This week, Pastor Nick brought a powerful message challenging us to look closely at our lives, remember our true identity, recognize our Savior, and actively resist the pseudo-saviors that try to take His place.
The Opening Prayer
"Father, You are amazing. You are a good, good Father. Lord, You desire to know us. You desire a relationship with us. Father, You have nothing but grace and mercy to shower upon us. Lord, tonight, I just pray as we look at what John has to say about idols, that You open hearts. I pray that You open hearts and do what only You can do: mend the broken. Father, I pray for You to move, and I pray for Your words to be spoken, not mine. Lord, we thank You for everything that You've done and for all that You provide—the blessings on blessings that we have. Father, we ask this in Your holy and precious name. Amen."
Defining the Idols in Our Lives
An idol isn't just a statue made of stone or wood; it is anything in your life that you devote more time, energy, and effort to than God. Anything can become an idol if we let it drive us.
To understand how we guard ourselves against this, we have to look at the progression of this journey over the last few weeks:
Week 1: Only God Saves. Salvation comes from God alone because of His hesed love—His deep, unfailing, covenant love for us.
Week 2: The Trap of Fear. Fear turns our eyes away from God, causing us to stumble and chase the fake things of this world.
Week 3: Seeking Christ. We are only safe when we are completely rooted and minded on Christ.
Point 1: Remember Your Identity (1 John 5:18-19)
"We know that God’s children do not make a practice of sinning, for God’s Son holds them securely, and the evil one cannot touch them. We know that we are children of God, and that the world around us is under the control of the evil one."
When verse 18 says that God's children "do not make a practice of sinning," it doesn't mean Christians are perfect. As John wrote earlier in 1 John 1:8, if we claim we have no sin, we fool ourselves.
Think of a professional athlete. They have an intentional, daily routine of practice to stay elite at their sport. When you have a new identity in Christ, you no longer make sin your intentional routine. You no longer take delight in it. Instead, you feel the Holy Spirit's conviction driving you to repentance.
The Danger of Forgetting
Pastor Matt asked the room some piercing questions:
"When was the last time you sat down and truly remembered what Christ saved you from?"
"Do you still remember that your salvation is a gift, or have you started treating it like something you earned?"
"Church, if we don't remember what we were saved from, then we can't recognize our Savior."
Point 2: Recognize Your Savior (1 John 5:20)
"And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we live in fellowship with the true God, because we live in fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and He is eternal life."
To recognize means to acknowledge something—to completely accept its reality and authority. Pastor Matt broke down three distinct things we must recognize about Jesus:
1. Recognizing His Identity as Savior
Grounded in Luke 19:10, He came to seek and save the lost. He is the only Savior there is, and the only Savior we have. There is no backup plan.
2. Recognizing His Authority
Grounded in Matthew 28:18, He has all authority in heaven and on earth. If we don't give Him full authority, we end up surrendering control to the desires of the world.
3. Recognizing His Truth
Grounded in John 14:6-7, Jesus declares: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is." Why did John spend so much time encouraging us to know Christ? Because to know Christ is to know the Father. If you miss Jesus, you miss God entirely.
Point 3: Resist the Idols of This World (1 John 5:21)
John closes his entire letter with an imperative command: "Dear children, keep yourselves from idols."
The original Greek word used here for "keep" or "guard" is phylasso. It means to watch with intense vigilance, to protect from danger, and to actively resist. This is a command, not a suggestion.
"Church, how can you resist something if you don't recognize it in the first place? How can you fight against the things of the world if you can't separate them from the truth of Christ?"
The Trap of the Pseudo-Savior
When anything besides Jesus functions as your alternative source of confidence, it becomes a pseudo-savior. You get something you think will save you, but it can't. You get something you think will make you feel better, but it leaves you more broken. You get something you think will fill you up, but you end up more empty than when you started.
To resist the fakes, we must know exactly what Christ is not:
Christ is not your bro. He is the King of kings.
Christ is not a handout or a magic wish granter. He is Sovereign.
Christ is not just a guy with good morals who says cool things. * Christ is not your excuse to sin or your get-out-of-jail-free card.
Christ is not hateful, He is not a lie, and He is not dead! He is risen, He is alive, and He holds His children securely forever.
The Invitation: What Are You Waiting For?
As the band began to play, Pastor Matt brought the message straight to the doorstep of every heart:
"Do you know Christ? If the answer is yes—good. But some of us know Christ, but we don't remember our identity. Some know Christ as Savior, but have failed to relinquish control and give Him authority. Some fail to resist the things of the world. If you are a struggling believer, pray. The altar is open. You cannot change yourself; you must rely on Him."
Then, he turned to those who are completely outside of faith:
"What are you waiting for? Whatever you are chasing after—the money, the trucks, the fame, the sex—isn't going to save you. You want to be free from idols? You have to know Christ. It doesn't matter what you've done. He died for it. You don't think you can be forgiven? You can. You must not know Christ if you don't think you can be forgiven. Stand with me."
Conclusion & Call to Action (CTA)
To know Christ is to resist all that is not Him. This week, take an honest look at your own "before and after" picture. Have you allowed worldly desires, self-reliance, or a comfortable, fake version of Jesus to take the wheel?
The altar is always open, and God's hesed love is ready to welcome you back. If you are struggling to lay down an idol, or if you want to know more about the good news of Jesus, please leave a comment below, reach out to us, or join us in prayer this week. Let’s stand guard together.
