Sunday Morning Reflections New Mercies in the Midst of the Midnight Hour

Sunday Morning Devotional: New Mercies in the Midst of the Midnight Hour

Good morning, friends. As the quiet of this Sunday settles over Shreveport, I invite you to join me in a moment of reflection, one that comes from a very real, and recently challenging, place.

Life has a way of throwing unexpected curveballs, often when we least expect them. This past weekend, for me, was a testament to that. What began with the promise of a joyful Sunday coffee and breakfast, filled with laughter and the warmth of family, quickly veered into a series of challenges that left me feeling more than a little "banged up," both physically and emotionally.

Illness struck late last week, leading into a weekend of discomfort and missed plans. Then came the unexpected fall on the porch, leaving me with a concussion and various scrapes. Just when I thought the night couldn't bring more, an early morning call, deep in the quiet hours, revealed a loved one's fall and their raw, vulnerable fear of being alone. And amidst it all, concerns for another family member's health added a significant layer of worry.

In moments like these, when you're feeling sick, physically vulnerable, and perhaps a touch lonely in the quiet of the night, it’s easy for the weight of it all to feel overwhelming. Sleep is elusive, discomfort is constant, and the world can feel a bit darker. You might find yourself asking, "Where is the comfort in this?"

But it is precisely in these "midnight hours" that the enduring truth of God's Word shines brightest. It’s a lamp in the darkness, a gentle whisper of reassurance when the world feels loud with worry.

A Word for Our Weary Souls:

As I navigated those long, early morning stretches, my mind clung to a passage that speaks directly to these times. I want to share it with you now, from the book of Lamentations, chapter 3, verses 22-23:

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23)

Reflection and Reassurance:

Consider those words: "New every morning." No matter how difficult the night has been – whether marked by physical pain, emotional distress, or the heavy burden of caregiving – God's mercies are not depleted. They are fresh and new with every dawn, a promise that His faithfulness is unwavering.

This passage is a powerful reassurance when dealing with the unexpected turns of life: the demands of caregiving for loved ones, personal health setbacks, and the emotional weight of those we cherish. It tells us that we are not forgotten, not abandoned, and that strength and comfort are available. This strength doesn't come from our own reserves, which can feel utterly empty, but from an unwavering, divine love that is constant and steadfast.

Carrying This Truth Forward:

So, as we embrace this new Sunday morning, I invite you to carry the echo of this truth with you. Even when we're down, sick, lonely, and vulnerable, the Word of God endures and reassures us. It reminds us that with every new morning, there is new mercy, a fresh opportunity to lean into a love that never ceases.

May your Sunday be filled with a quiet peace, sustained by the steadfast love and new mercies that greet us each new day.

Saturday Morning Reflections: The Stillness Before the Day Awakens

Saturday Morning Reflections: The Stillness Before the Day Awakens (6:17 AM CDT, Saturday, May 31st, 2025, Shreveport, Louisiana)

As I settle onto my front porch here in Shreveport, Louisiana, the air is wonderfully nice and cool, a gentle breeze whispering through the porch area. Now, the first soft glow of the rising sun begins to signal the arrival of a new day, painting the eastern sky with delicate hues. It's in this tranquil transition, the quiet pause before the world fully stirs, that I find myself drawn to reflection.

The pre-dawn quiet of Shreveport envelops the porch this morning, a hushed stillness broken only by the gentle clinking of my coffee cup. The air is cool and carries the promise of a day yet to be written. Being up before the full chorus of the world begins offers a unique perspective, a tranquil space for reflection before the demands and distractions of Saturday take hold.

There's a profound beauty in these early hours, a sense of being present in the quiet anticipation of what the day might bring. It reminds me of the opening verses of Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God." In the stillness of this early morning, there's an invitation to quiet our minds, to tune out the internal and external noise, and to simply acknowledge God's presence.

As I sit here, the lingering darkness slowly giving way to the first hints of light on the horizon, I'm reminded of the concept of waiting in Scripture. Often, moments of transition, like the dawn of a new day, can mirror times of waiting in our spiritual lives. Isaiah 40:31 offers encouragement during these times: "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." This early morning quiet can be a time to renew our hope in the Lord, to find strength in His presence before stepping into the day's activities.

This quiet porch time also offers a space to consider the blessings of the week past and to set intentions, however gentle, for the day ahead. It's a moment to cultivate gratitude for the simple gifts – the taste of coffee, the coolness of the morning air, the promise of a new day. Psalm 118:24 comes to mind: "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Even in the quiet stillness, there's a call to recognize God's hand in the creation of this very day and to choose joy.

As the first rays of sunlight begin to filter through the trees, painting the sky with soft hues, may this quiet reflection on the porch set a tone of peace and intentionality for the rest of our Saturday. May we carry the stillness of these early moments with us, remembering to "be still and know" that He is God, and to find our strength and hope in Him throughout the day.

What does this early morning stillness bring to your heart and mind? What scriptures resonate with you as you greet the dawn of a new day?

In Conclusion: Devotion for Today (Saturday, May 31st, 2025):

As we embrace the quiet of this Saturday morning, let's reflect on the importance of trusting in God's perfect timing. Often, like the slow unfolding of dawn, His plans for us unfold gradually, requiring patience and faith. Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us, "He has made everything beautiful in its time." While we may have hopes and expectations for the day ahead, or even longings for the future, let's find peace in the present moment, trusting that God is working all things together for good (Romans 8:28). Just as we embrace the stillness before the day's activity, let's embrace the quiet confidence that comes from knowing God is in control and His timing is always best. May we find contentment in where we are today, knowing that each moment is a gift from His hand.

Knocked Down, Lifted Up

Knocked Down, Lifted Up: Finding Strength in Stillness (and Trust)

Well, yesterday took an unexpected turn. What started as a seemingly normal day ended with a rough night of a pounding migraine and a truly unpleasant bout of sickness. It's a stark reminder of how fragile our bodies can be and how quickly things can change.

As I lay there feeling utterly drained, the usual flurry of thoughts and to-dos quieted down. In the stillness brought on by physical discomfort, there was a strange sort of clarity. It was a moment where I wasn't in control, and frankly, I couldn't be. All I could do was ride it out and trust that my body would eventually recover.

And that's where a deeper sense of reliance came in. In those moments of feeling weak and vulnerable, there's a profound comfort in placing your trust in something bigger than yourself. For me, that's God. It's knowing that even when we're at our lowest, there's a source of strength and healing that we can lean on. It's not about magically snapping our fingers and feeling instantly better, but about having faith in the process of recovery, trusting in the body's innate ability to heal, and finding peace in surrendering to what is.

This resonates with the words found in Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God." In the midst of our struggles, whether physical or otherwise, there's a powerful message in finding stillness and acknowledging a higher power. It's in those moments of quiet surrender that we can often find a deeper sense of peace and trust in the process unfolding.

This morning, thankfully, I'm feeling much improved. The coolness of the early air and a gentle breeze are a welcome contrast to yesterday's intensity. It's a reminder that even after a storm, there's a sense of calm and renewal.

This experience has reinforced for me the importance of slowing down and listening to my body. It's also highlighted the quiet strength that comes from trusting in a power greater than ourselves, especially when we feel powerless. Whether you share my specific faith or find solace in another form of higher power or inner resilience, I believe there's a universal truth in finding strength through surrender and trusting in the journey of healing.

May we all find comfort and strength in our moments of vulnerability and trust in the path toward healing, whatever that looks like for each of us.

  It's Been Forged in Crisis

Greetings, fellow adventurers! Prepare to plunge into the sprawling and unpredictable Urland Universe, a setting meticulously crafted for the versatile Open D6 system. Forget dusty tomes and predictable quests – here, science fiction collides with breathtaking fantasy, where laser fire echoes through ancient ruins, and a starship might just share the skies with a reality-bending ether dragon.

A Multiverse Under Siege

The Urland Universe teeters on the brink. A cosmic apocalypse looms, threatening to unravel the very fabric of existence – a concept perhaps disturbingly familiar to those who have contemplated wielding ultimate power. The once-stable network of interdimensional portals now flickers erratically, their control wrestled away by the enigmatic and powerful ether dragons. These majestic beings, capable of navigating the chaotic currents of reality, have become both saviors and formidable gatekeepers of the altered multiverse.

Refuge in Zimarala: A Monsterous Melting Pot in the Tygerian Isles

In a desperate act of salvation, the ether dragons guided a mass exodus from Troll World, a once-proud planet now ravaged by the relentless invasion of the dreaded Klon Star Spider Empire. Its hardy and diverse inhabitants, scarred by war and loss, found sanctuary on Zimarala, specifically on the vibrant Island of Tuslan within the sprawling Tygerian Isles.

Tuslan, already a melting pot of unique creatures and cultures, now grapples with the influx of Troll World refugees – a diverse people in their own right. Imagine gruff troll warriors, their axes still stained with the ichor of Klon spiders, attempting to coexist with the sleek, technologically advanced Zimaralan spacers. Picture stoic giants sharing crowded marketplaces with nimble, winged humanoids native to the Tygerian Isles. This unprecedented mixing of species, born from tragedy and the necessity of survival, has created a fascinating, and at times volatile, dynamic – a true monstrous melting pot.

Adding to this intricate tapestry is the arrival of a new resource: an adventure module, painstakingly created and submitted to the legendary Ken St Andre for publication. This module promises to be a vital guide to navigating the complexities of Tuslan, offering insights into the cultures, challenges, and potential alliances within this extraordinary new reality. Furthermore, adventures within the Urland Universe can be richly enhanced by drawing upon the detailed creatures and lore found within Ken St Andre's own Monsterary of Zimrala Campaign Book and the comprehensive rules presented in the Monster Monsters 2.7 rule books, offering a wealth of monstrous encounters and compatible mechanics.

Above it all, the ether dragons maintain their silent watch, their colossal forms occasionally breaking through the clouds above the Tygerian Isles. They serve as a constant reminder of the vast forces at play in the multiverse and the precariousness of the newfound sanctuary on Tuslan. The Tygerian Isles are no longer just a chain of islands; they are a crucible where survival hinges on understanding, adaptation, and perhaps, forging unexpected bonds between the most unlikely of allies.

Open D6 and Beyond: A Universe of Possibilities

The flexible and intuitive Open D6 system is the perfect engine to power your adventures in this dynamic setting. Whether you're a seasoned D6 veteran or new to the system, the Urland Universe offers a welcoming and expansive playground. And with its compatibility with Ken St Andre's acclaimed Monsterary of Zimrala and the robust rules of Monster Monsters 2.7, you'll have a vast toolkit at your disposal to bring the monstrous inhabitants and thrilling challenges of this universe to life.

Will you be a hardened survivor of Troll World, navigating the unfamiliar customs of Tuslan? A daring pilot charting the unpredictable portal routes under the watchful eyes of the ether dragons? Or perhaps an intrepid explorer delving into the mysteries of the Klon Star Spider Empire and the secrets of the cosmic apocalypse, armed with the knowledge of monstrous lore from Zimrala and the comprehensive rules of Monster Monsters?

The Urland Universe offers endless possibilities for thrilling campaigns and unforgettable stories, now enriched by the legacy of Ken St Andre's monstrous creations and detailed rule sets. Grab your dice, gather your companions, and prepare to forge your legend in a multiverse where anything is possible!

The Storms We Face: And the Kindness That Sees Us Through

"The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him." - Psalm 28:7

Life, in its unpredictable nature, often feels like navigating a turbulent sea. We encounter sudden squalls of financial hardship, the battering winds of loss, and the torrential downpours of illness or despair. These "storms of life" can leave us feeling exposed, vulnerable, and questioning our ability to weather the tempest. We may find ourselves tossed about, struggling to keep our footing, and longing for a safe harbor.

In these challenging times, when the clouds are darkest and the thunder rolls loudest in our hearts, it's easy to feel utterly alone. Yet, scripture reminds us that even in the midst of the storm, we are not forsaken. Our faith teaches us to anchor ourselves in the unwavering love and strength of God, our ultimate refuge. But often, God's grace manifests itself in tangible ways, through the outstretched hands and compassionate hearts of those around us.

Today, as I set on the front porch, I am reflecting on the storms I have inevitably face and the profound impact of kindness that acts as a beacon in the darkness. Just as a lighthouse guides ships through treacherous waters, the empathy and support of others can illuminate our path and help us navigate the most perilous journeys. Let us consider how these acts of human kindness reflect the very heart of Christ, who offered solace, healing, and unwavering love to all who were weary and burdened.

When Life's Storms Hit: Rising, Fractured but Forward

Life, in its unpredictable nature, often feels like a journey across a calm sea, until, without warning, a tempest descends. When the storms of life truly hit – the unexpected losses, the crushing disappointments, the profound betrayals – they don't just knock us down; they can shatter us, leaving us feeling fractured, fundamentally altered, and perhaps unrecognizable even to ourselves. In those moments, the very ground beneath us seems to give way, and the idea of simply "getting up" feels like an insurmountable task. The pieces of who we were lie scattered, and the question echoes: how do we possibly reassemble ourselves? Yet, despite the deep cracks and the undeniable pain, there remains an unwavering truth: we must keep moving on. This isn't about ignoring the damage, but about acknowledging it, carrying it, and finding the strength to take the next breath, the next step, even when every fiber of our being feels broken.

Picking Up the Pieces: A Retelling of Loss and the Long Road to Rebuilding

"How do you pick up the pieces of your life when so much evil has been done to you? Where do you begin again?" These poignant words from Frodo Baggins resonate deeply with the human experience of navigating profound loss and seeking a path forward. Many have inquired about the events that irrevocably altered the lives of my parents and myself, and it is with a sense of reflection that I offer another glimpse into that challenging period.

Our family home, the anchor of our lives since April 1971, was lost in March 2007. This marked the beginning of a period of instability, with multiple relocations for my parents and myself. In 2009, I moved my parents to Las Vegas, where my father sadly passed away shortly after. The subsequent financial hardship left me briefly homeless before I managed to secure a small apartment for my mother and myself. My mother, after enduring further health challenges, passed away in September 2011.

Facing renewed homelessness in Las Vegas, a compassionate friend offered support, providing a temporary lifeline. However, the desire to return to Arizona eventually led me to Tucson in 2013, where I navigated a period of homelessness before finding transitional housing through the Primavera Foundation. After seven months, I moved into a small studio apartment at the Alamo Apartments, a hard-won stability.

However, the stability found at the Alamo Apartments was temporary. When the time came to renew my lease in June of 2014, a significant rent increase was proposed – from 30% of my income to a staggering $500.00 per month. This amount would have consumed the majority of my limited funds, making it an unsustainable situation. Faced with this impossible choice, I made the difficult decision to vacate the apartment, once again placing my belongings back into storage.

Knowing the brutal Arizona summer heat would make homelessness in Tucson even more perilous, I made a bold and perhaps unexpected decision. With my camping gear loaded onto my back, I sought out the entrance to the Arizona Trail from Tucson and began to walk. Did I, against all odds, manage to traverse the entire distance back to Flagstaff? Well, that is a story for other blog posts, tales from a challenging period that might just surprise you...

Yours as always,

Captain Hedges

When the Storm Rages Across the Sky in Shreveport Louisiana

When the Sky Over Highland Roars: Witnessing a Shreveport Storm

There's a certain drama that unfolds when the Louisiana sky decides to put on a show. And nowhere is that drama more captivating than when it plays out over the charming, tree-lined streets of Shreveport's historic Highland neighborhood. Recently, I had the chance (or perhaps was caught in the middle of!) a particularly spectacular storm rolling in, and the experience was nothing short of breathtaking.

The air had been thick and heavy all afternoon, a familiar prelude to a Gulf Coast tempest. The usual Louisiana humidity felt amplified, clinging to everything like a damp shroud. Then, the shift began. The sky, once a hazy blue, started to bruise, the edges darkening into deep purples and angry grays. A low rumble, at first distant, grew steadily louder, a guttural growl echoing across the neighborhood.

From my vantage point, on the front porch, I watched as the wind picked up, causing the mature oak and magnolia trees that define Highland to sway and dance. Leaves swirled in the streets, and the air crackled with an almost palpable energy. The anticipation was electric, a feeling both thrilling and slightly unnerving.

Then came the light show.

The first few flashes were distant, illuminating the darkening clouds with an eerie, internal glow. But soon, they became closer, more intense. Jagged streaks of brilliant white and blue tore across the sky, momentarily turning the familiar Victorian and Craftsman homes into stark silhouettes against the tempestuous backdrop. The accompanying thunder was no longer a distant murmur, but sharp, percussive cracks that seemed to shake the very ground.

It was a raw display of nature's power, unfolding right above the beloved landmarks of Highland – the brick streets, the welcoming porches, the vibrant gardens that usually bask in the Louisiana sunshine. For a brief period, the tranquility of the neighborhood was replaced by a symphony of wind, rain, and the electrifying dance of lightning.

There's a unique beauty in witnessing such a storm. It reminds you of the forces that are always at play, the power that lies just beyond our everyday experience. Even as I felt a healthy respect for the intensity of the weather, there was an undeniable sense of awe. The way the lightning illuminated the intricate details of the clouds, the sheer force of the wind bending the sturdy trees – it was a spectacle that no photograph, no matter how stunning (like the one I managed to capture!), can truly convey.

As quickly as it arrived, the heart of the storm eventually moved on, grumbling its way eastward. The heavy rain softened to a drizzle, the wind calmed, and the bruised sky slowly began to lighten. The air, washed clean, carried the fresh scent of rain-soaked earth.

Stepping outside after the storm passed, there was a sense of renewal. Puddles reflected the returning light, and the leaves on the trees seemed greener, vibrant after their soaking. The familiar sounds of the neighborhood – birds chirping, distant traffic – returned, a comforting reminder of the peace that follows the storm.

Witnessing a storm like that over Highland serves as a powerful reminder of nature's grandeur and its ability to transform even the most familiar landscapes. It's a spectacle that leaves you feeling both humbled and invigorated, a story etched in the sky and the memory. And while I wouldn't necessarily wish for such intense weather every day, there's no denying the captivating beauty of a Louisiana storm rolling through one of Shreveport's most cherished neighborhoods.

Thursday Morning update Update Real World, RPGs, and Rebuild

Hey everyone,

Happy Thursday morning from the heart of the cypress swamp! I'm out here on the front porch of the cabin with my uncles, the coffee's brewing, and the stories are flowing.

I wanted to pop in for a quick update and also say I'm sorry. If you've been keeping up with the blog, you've probably noticed the story posts haven't been as regular lately. I apologize for the delay in getting those out to you.

As many of you know by now, real-world stuff has a way of, well, getting in the way. Life throws its curveballs, and sometimes those curveballs require all your focus and energy, pulling you away from the creative projects and shared adventures we love. It's a universal truth, isn't it? We all have our own battles and busy periods that demand our full attention.

But I want to assure you, the stories, the adventures, and the spirit of this blog are very much alive in my mind. I'm actively planning on getting back to those at some point. My vision includes not just new content, but also a significant effort to rebuild my blog website. This isn't just about a fresh coat of paint; it's about creating a true home for the historical archives of my original RPG stories and, yes, the raw and real accounts of my real-life homeless adventures from the past. Once I get back to Arizona, I also plan on getting my family pictures and history of my family, etc., organized. Plus all the game design work I am doing for MM 2.7.

These are narratives that mean a lot to me, and I know they resonate with many of you. They're a testament to resilience, creativity, and the human spirit, whether we're talking about navigating fantastical realms or the challenging landscapes of everyday life.

So, while I can't give you an exact date just yet please know that the wheels are turning. I'm committed to bringing these stories and experiences back to life and creating a more robust platform for them.

Thank you, as always, for your understanding, your patience, and for being such an incredible community. Your support means the world, especially when the "real world stuff" gets heavy.

Wishing you all a peaceful Thursday Morning.

Stay tuned, [For more adventures of Captain Hedges Across Time and space]

Good morning, everyone. Before the sun rises on this early Thursday, May 29, 2025, here in Shreveport, I'm up early, making coffee and taking a moment for a quick personal update and some blogging.

I've been dealing with some persistent discomfort, specifically with my ribs, which are still giving me a bit of a challenge. On top of that, the occasional hot flashes, a lingering effect from my time in the Congo, continue to make their presence known. My internal thermostat tends to run a bit higher than most, usually around 99 degrees, which for me, is just my normal. It's a unique aspect of my health journey that I've learned to live with.

Despite these ongoing physical hurdles, I want to share that overall, I'm doing well. It's a reminder that even when parts of us are feeling the strain, our spirit can remain strong. Each day presents its own set of circumstances, and the key is to navigate them with a steady hand and a positive outlook.

In these quiet morning hours, as the coffee brews and the world outside is still waking, it's a good time to reflect on strength. We often find ourselves in situations where we wish things were different, where pain or discomfort tries to define our day. But just as the dawn breaks, bringing new light, we too can find renewed strength within ourselves. Remember that even small acts of perseverance, like simply getting up and making that coffee, are victories. There's a quiet power in continuing, in choosing to face the day with hope, no matter what our bodies or circumstances might be telling us. This morning let's hold onto that inner light that keeps us going.

Wishing you all a day filled with comfort and resilience, whatever challenges you might be facing.

Yours,

Captain Hedges

Storm and Sunrise on the porch

Wednesday, May 28, 2025: Storm and Sunrise

I'm sitting on the porch this morning, sipping coffee with the uncles, watching the world awaken while the storm here rages on, the sun trying to shine through the cloudy gloom. It's a powerful duality, this interplay of calm and chaos, and it got me thinking about how we all navigate the storms in our lives, whether they're literal downpours or the tumultuous events that shake our foundations.

It reminds me of the Tiger Force Shadow Saga, where soldiers faced unimaginable trials in the Vietnam War, and later in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Even their children carried that legacy into similar conflicts. They endured, found strength, and pushed through, much like the sun relentlessly tries to break through the clouds. And on a grander scale, it’s akin to the cosmic apocalypses I sometimes unleash – even in their destructive implosions and explosions, there's always a new creation waiting to emerge. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit, whether it's battling on a distant shore or finding refuge in places like Zimarala, thanks to the ether dragons who control the multiverse portals.

What storms are you facing today, and how are you finding your own sunrise amidst the gloom?

Happy Birthday 3:18
