5 AM Reflections by Bayou Earl: The Ultimate Backup

Captain’s Log: 5:00 AM, The Kitchen Stove

By five o'clock, the 12-Mile Bayou is still pitch-black outside. Inside the Shreveport cabin, the only sounds are the quiet breathing of the sleeping crew and the low, steady sizzle of thick-cut bacon just starting to render in the pan. Uncle Bill is snoring lightly in his recliner, Detective Jones is dead to the world on the couch, and Doctor John is perfectly still in his meditation corner.

As I stand alone over the stove getting the morning meal started, my mind drifts back to the daily devotionals I was reading earlier. In my 3 AM post, I talked about the Upper Room message—about letting go of the burning rope when things are out of our control. But there was another message for today, the In Touch devotional, and I held that one back for right now, in the quiet before the storm.

Today's In Touch sermon focused on the absolute, unshakeable promise of the Lord's presence when we are facing the unknown.

When you know you are about to walk into the deepest, darkest cypress grove in the bayou to hunt down something that secretes acidic glue and steals hundred-pound footlockers, it is real easy to let your mind wander to the danger. It's easy to put all your faith in your gear, or Doctor John's gris-gris bags, or the badge sitting in Detective Jones's pocket. But this morning's word was a direct reminder that we don't ever walk into the darkness alone. The Lord is standing right there in the muck with us. He is the ultimate backup, stepping into the shadows right by our side.

Knowing that settles the nerves better than anything else as I watch the bacon pop and get ready for the day ahead. Let them sleep a little longer. The bayou will still be waiting.
