๐Ÿ“ Earl’s GM Notes: From the Newsroom to the Tabletop

Campaign Design Log — July 17, 2026: "Every good campaign needs to breathe with the real world. This morning, while sitting at the cabin desk with a fresh cup of black coffee, I caught a breaking segment on ABC World News about a massive parasite outbreak linked to shredded lettuce at Taco Bell restaurants.

The CDC and FDA just released an official update on it. They are investigating a massive multistate outbreak of a microscopic stomach parasite called Cyclospora, and the primary suspect is shredded iceberg lettuce supplied to some Taco Bell locations.

Here are the fast facts on what's happening right now:

  • The Culprit: A parasite called Cyclospora cayetanensis. It causes a severe intestinal illness (cyclosporiasis) with symptoms like watery diarrhea, intense stomach cramps, bloating, and fatigue.

  • The Scope: The numbers are staggering—health officials are tracking thousands of cases across the country, but the main cluster directly linked to the restaurant lettuce is concentrated in 5 states: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Michigan has been hit the absolute hardest.

  • The Action Taken: As a precaution, select Taco Bell locations in the affected regions have voluntarily yanked fresh shredded lettuce, cilantro-onion mixes, and guacamole off the menu line entirely to protect customers. The FDA traced the lettuce back to a major regional supplier and is working to make sure no more contaminated product hits the market.

It's definitely a good thing you're staying in at the cabin today cooking your own breakfast and drinking that fresh black coffee!

As a GM, you never let a good real-world crisis go to waste! I immediately translated this real-life scare straight into our campaign as a brand-new adventure for today. We are turning a local fast-food outbreak into a high-stakes, closed-room quarantine scenario at the B&B. It puts the players on the defensive, strips them of their physical reliability, and introduces a completely different kind of dread—one that hides in their morning rations rather than the shadows of the bayou.

Best of all, this module is highly adaptable. Any of the players can take place in this adventure using their existing campaign worlds PC base, bringing their established characters right into the thick of the quarantine containment zone to see how they handle the biological lockdown!"Captain Hedges

Introduction

The quiet mist hanging over the 12 Mile Bayou usually signals a peaceful morning, but today, the air at the Cypress Shadow B&B is thick with a different kind of tension. What started as a standard strategy meeting for the team yesterday has spiraled into an absolute containment crisis. After sharing a meal of fresh garden salads on the porch last night, the entire squad suddenly came down with severe, debilitating stomach illness.

By midnight, local authorities were notified, and as dawn breaks, the CDC and FDA have officially arrived on-scene, placing the entire bed and breakfast under a strict federal quarantine.

☣️ Campaign Mechanics: Swamp Dread & Lovecraftian D6 Rules

When biological terrors meet cosmic paranoia, the system shifts. This encounter utilizes the Open D6 baseline combined with specialized Lovecraftian D6 / Sanity rules.

1. Swamp Dread (Environmental Hazard)

Any character who consumed the contaminated salad must immediately make a Stamina (or Physique) roll against a Difficulty of 18.

  • Failure: The character gains the Sickened condition, reducing all physical Attribute and Skill pools by -1D due to cramping and exhaustion.

  • Critical Failure (Wild Die 1): The character is fully incapacitated with severe dehydration and cannot take physical actions.

2. Lovecraftian D6 Sanity Mechanics

The presence of armed, faceless federal agents sealing off the cabin with biohazard tape triggers an immediate Sanity Check (Difficulty 12).

  • Failure: Lose 1 Point of Sanity.

  • Sanity Loss Effects: If a character's Sanity drops below their current Mind/Knowledge attribute, they gain the Paranoid temporary mental affliction, suspecting that the "quarantine" is actually a cover-up for a cosmic entity securement.

๐Ÿ—ƒ️ Character & Threat Stat Blocks (D6 System)

The Enemy: Cyclospora Cayetanensis (Microscopic Parasite)

This biological hazard cannot be fought with normal weapons. It must be purged medically or resisted physically.

  • Scale: Microscopic (N/A)

  • Type: Biological Parasite / Environmental Hazard

  • Infection Attribute: 4D (Rolls 4D6 against target's Stamina/Physique when ingested)

  • Incubation Period: 12 to 24 hours

  • Rules / Special Abilities:

    • Acid & Poison Immunity: Because this is a gut-dwelling parasitic infection, standard biological immunity to external poisons and acids does not protect the host from the internal, cell-level nutrient sap.

    • Dehydration Drain: Every 6 hours an infected character remains untreated, they must succeed on a Easy (10) Physique check or lose 1D of Strength temporarily.

With the CDC & FDA Mobile Command Center fully operational in the driveway, the team has to figure out how to recover from the crippling parasite infection before federal agents start digging too deep into the secret blueprints lying on the tables.
