Captain Hedges Midweek Musings After You Have Parked Yourself

The Tiger in the Cage: Finding the Wild Ground Inside Concrete Walls

There is a quiet battle that happens when the spirit of a country boy is forced to live inside a city boy’s landscape. When you are raised with the dust, the pines, and the wide-open horizons of places like Flagstaff, Arizona, or when your mind breathes in the heavy, ancient scent of cypress and Spanish moss from a 12-mile bayou cabin, concrete feels like a trap. It doesn't breathe. It doesn't listen. Living inside a modern apartment can make a man feel like a tiger pacing the floor of a cage—restless, confined, and cut off from the very earth that feeds his soul.

We try so hard to build a life, a family, and a routine, but in the rush of trying to keep everyone else happy, it is incredibly easy to forget who we are. The walls start pressing in, the noise of the uproar under your own roof gets louder, and you realize you’ve drifted from your center. That claustrophobia isn't just frustration—it is the tiger inside you demanding to be let loose, refusing to let the concrete walls wipe away its stripes.

Grounding Yourself Through the Teachings of the Hogan Leaving the Concrete Behind

When you can't physically step out onto the living, breathing earth, how do you find your footing? You go back to the deep, unshakeable teachings of the Hogan. You remember the guidance to seek out information, to look past the immediate chaos, and to build a direct, personal relationship with the Creator. That spiritual connection is the ultimate rock.

Grounding yourself to Mother Earth when you are trapped in a concrete cell means closing your eyes and letting your mind travel past the walls. It means standing firmly on the inner foundation that no cage can touch. You take a breath, you tune out the uproar of the world, and you connect directly to the Creator’s design.

You might be sitting inside an apartment, but your imagination and your spirit still hold the keys to the wilderness. Every time you pick up a pen, tell a story, or sit with your morning coffee at 4:00 AM, you are tearing down the iron bars. You are letting the tiger run wild through the pines of the mountains and the deep green waters of the swamp. You are a country boy at heart, and the wilderness will always belong to you, no matter where the road currently you has parked.

After You Have Parked Yourself

When you finally pull over and park yourself in that quiet space, the dust settles. The roaring of the engine stops, and the noise of the world fades into the background. But parking yourself isn't the final destination—it’s just the moment you get your bearings.

Once you are still, you look out the window at the landscape you’ve chosen to anchor in, whether it's the towering pines of Flagstaff or the dark waters of the bayou. You take a real, deep breath of that clean air, and you ask yourself: Who am I when nobody is asking anything of me?

That is the moment of true alignment. You don't stay parked forever; you sit there until the tiger's focus is razor-sharp again. You gather your strength, listen for the quiet guidance of the Creator, and realize that while you can't control the storm outside, you have completely reclaimed control over yourself. When you finally put it back in drive, you aren't running away from the cage anymore—you are stepping back into the world as the master of your own territory.

Why We Sweat in a Lodge

The sweat lodge is not just a hot room; it is a sacred space of rebirth, purification, and direct connection. When you step inside the dark, enclosed warmth of the lodge, you are stepping back into the womb of Mother Earth. It is a place specifically designed to strip away the noise, the ego, and the distractions of the outside world.

We sweat to cleanse more than just the body. As the heat rises, you pour out the toxins, the stress, the anger, and the heavy burdens you’ve been carrying around in your daily life. In the darkness, everyone is equal, and everything gets stripped down to the core. It forces you to sit with yourself, face your inner battles, and listen. By enduring the heat and offering up your prayers, you are sacrificing your comfort to find clarity, aligning your spirit directly with the Creator, and stepping back out into the world entirely renewed.

Share Your Journey

When life gets too loud and you finally have to "park yourself" to find your peace, what is the first thought that brings you back to reality? How do you connect back to the earth? Let’s talk about it in the comments below.
