Throwback Thursday: Honoring a Legacy on His 90th Birthday
Today is a deeply personal Throwback Thursday for me. July 2nd marks what would have been my father’s 90th birthday. Born in Sedona back in 1936, Earl Clinton Hedges Sr. was a man of grit, honor, and exceptional skill. Though he passed away in 2009 at the age of 72, the impact he left on my life, my values, and my writing is as strong today as it ever was.
For those who follow my work, you know that real-world honor and dedication heavily inspire the stories I build. My father was the absolute bedrock of that inspiration.

He was affectionately known by those closest to him as "Earlybird." He lived a full, dedicated life as a lifelong resident of Flagstaff, Arizona, where he and my mother, Joan, built their life together after marrying in the summer of 1964.
He was a man who knew the value of hard work, discipline, and handling serious responsibilities. His hands-on passions and professional dedication directly shaped my own creative blueprints:
The Veteran & Munitions Handler: He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1961. Later, he brought that sharp discipline and focus to his career, eventually retiring from the Navajo Army Depot as a gifted munitions handler.
The Mechanic & Craftsman: If it had wheels or required meticulous skill, he mastered it. He was a highly gifted motorcycle mechanic who lived for the open road, alongside passions for radio electronics, leatherwork, hunting, and fishing.
When I write about specialized tactical crews, military discipline, or rugged characters who know how to survive and maintain their gear under pressure, I’m pulling directly from the quiet strength and real-world expertise he demonstrated every day.
He was a proud son, brother, husband, and father. While he was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary, and his siblings, George and Shirley, his memory is carried forward daily by my mother Joan, his brother Clifford, his sister Shiryl, and by me—his son, Earl Jr.
On what would have been his 90th birthday, the Harley-Davidson cake on the table represents just a fraction of the things he loved. But the lessons he taught me about integrity, focus, and staying true to your path are the real gifts that remain.
Rest easy, Earlybird. We’re raising a glass to you today.
