A Message from Mayor Thorin Blackwood III: Navigating the Tremors of Change (June 9, 2025)
Good morning, citizens of Nocturnis.
As the sun once again graces our spires this Monday, June 9th, 2025, I address you with a heavy heart, yet with an unwavering resolve. The past days have tested the very foundations of our beloved city, and indeed, the resilience of our spirit. We have faced not one, but multiple challenges that threaten to unravel the intricate tapestry of our existence.
The earth beneath us has cried out. The 10.2 magnitude earthquake that ripped through Nocturnis was an event of unprecedented scale, leaving cracks not only in our ancient wards and modern districts but in our collective sense of security. Families are displaced, businesses are shattered, and sections of the Lower Undercity have suffered catastrophic collapse. My deepest sympathies go out to all who have lost loved ones, homes, or livelihoods. Our immediate focus is on rescue, recovery, and providing aid to all affected. Emergency arcane brigades and City Guard units are tirelessly working to stabilize damaged structures and assist our displaced citizens. We are dedicating all available resources to this monumental effort.
This natural disaster, however, strikes a city already grappling with profound internal tensions. The unrest in the Shadowfen District continues to weigh heavily upon us all. The recent actions by the Arcane Suppression Unit, while intended to uphold order, have unfortunately inflamed deep-seated grievances. I acknowledge the pain and frustration felt by many of our non-magical and lesser-arcane citizens.
My administration is committed to de-escalation and to understanding the legitimate concerns of the Shadowfen community. We must find a path forward that ensures both public safety and equitable treatment for all. The deployment of the Nocturnis City Guard is a measure of last resort, and I assure you, we are working diligently to restore peace and trust through dialogue, not just force.
Thier fore, I have called back into service the Star Squad retired Captain Goldman and Sgt Bulldog Maddex to return to the Nocturnis Police Acadamy to train a new group of quick responders and act as a both a negation squad and new swat team for our beloved city.
And then, I must also address, that there is the ever-present, discordant hum emanating from the Etherium Guild, driven by Arch-Artificer Lyra Vex. Her ambition to harness the very essence of the ethereal, while promising boundless possibilities, has repeatedly threatened the stability of our gio thermic ley lines and the delicate balance of our magical ecosystem. My public disagreements with Arch-Artificer Vex are not born of personal animosity, but of a profound responsibility to protect Nocturnis from unforeseen cosmic repercussions. Her "Universal Conduit Project," particularly in light of the recent tremor, underscores the vital need for caution and rigorous oversight. We cannot allow unchecked innovation to jeopardize the safety of our citizens or the very fabric of our reality.
Some scholars whisper of ancient forces, of cosmic stirrings that echo in the raw power of the Great Tremor, linking it to the sleeping behemoth that is Cthulhu. While such theories stir deep-seated fears, our immediate task is to face the tangible realities before us with courage and unity.
Nocturnis stands at a crossroads. My grandfather, Thorin Blackwood Sr., laid the groundwork for stability, and successive mayors have built upon it. Now, in 2025, as your Mayor, I face challenges unlike any my predecessors encountered before. But I believe in the strength of Nocturnis, in the ingenuity of our artificers, the wisdom of our Aza'tar Elders, and most importantly, in the unbreakable spirit of our residents, the indigenous peoples known now as Noctorians.
We will rebuild. We will heal. And we will find a way to forge a future where innovation and stability coexist, where all citizens feel safe and valued, and where the echoes of cosmic dread remain just that – echoes.
Stay strong, Nocturnis. We face this together.
Sincerely,
Mayor Thorin Blackwood III
