3 AM Whispers: Midweek Musings — The Bridge to the Bayou Pharmacy
Wednesday, December 17th, 2025
Good morning, everyone. It's Wednesday Midweek Musings here for December 17th, 2025. It’s well past 3 AM here at the cypress swamp cabin, and the silence of the last few days has been heavy. I owe you the truth about why the 12 Days of Wintermis countdown was nearly silenced.
Last Thursday night, at 2 AM, my phone rang. It was Captain Hedges calling from the emergency room. His voice was cracking with a fear I’d never heard from him—and this is a man who saw the heat of Desert Storm and the shadows of the Congo, with me.....................................
"They think I have sepsis," he told me. A recurring UTI had turned into a nightmare. The "Antibiotic Trap" had failed him; the meds were just scorched-earth spells that killed the good with the bad, letting the infection hide and then roar back with a 103-degree fever.
The Journey to the Barataria Boardwalks
While the Captain lay under those sterile hospital lights, I knew the Empire's medicine wasn't enough. As the Hedge Wizard of the Shreveport Cabin, I had to find the source. I grabbed my father's Vietnam-era Tiger Force knife—the blade that survived the 'Nam jungles before I carried it through Iraq and the Congo—and headed south.
🏎️ The Midnight Sprint: Shreveport to Barataria
The Descent Down I-49 He pushed the Mustang onto I-49 South, the ghost-grey tiger stripes on the hood shimmering as he hit triple digits. To anyone else, the road was a dark ribbon of asphalt, but with his Tygerian keen senses, Earl saw the world in high-definition infrared. He could see the heat rising off the pavement and the eyes of deer glowing hundreds of yards into the tree line.
The Atchafalaya Basin Run As he hit the elevated bridge over the Atchafalaya, the Mustang became a black bullet suspended between the stars and the swamp. The humid air whipped past his tufted ears, carrying the scent of salt and decay from the Gulf. He wasn't just driving; he was "tracking" the fastest route, his Level 5 Explorer instincts guiding him through the traffic like a predator moving through tall grass.
The New Orleans Perimeter He bypassed the city lights, the Mustang’s alchemically tuned intake whistling as it drank the thick, mana-heavy air of the delta. He didn't slow down until the pavement turned to the cracked, narrow roads leading into Jean Lafitte.
The Arrival at the Preserve He skidded to a halt at the edge of the Barataria boardwalks, the smell of hot rubber and ozone hanging in the air. The Mustang’s engine ticked as it cooled, the amber glow of the Vietnam-era knife on the console pulse-syncing with Earl’s own racing heart. He grabbed the blade, stepped out into the mist, and headed for the Hedge Portal.
He had made the 300-mile trip in record time. The "Iron Steed" had done its job; now it was time for the Wizard to do his.
I left the city behind and walked those long wooden boardwalks deep into the moss-draped cypress-tupelo swamp. That’s where I found him: the legendary Doctor John Montanee.
"The Captain's blood is turning to mud," Montanee said, his eyes like dark water. "The doctors try to wash the surface, but the Mites burrow deep. You don't need a storm; you need to change the vibration of the ground they stand on."
The Legend Returns
The Captain is recovering now. He’s a Level 20 Veteran, Soldier of Wars and it takes more than a microscopic parasite to take down a man who survived the Congo poachers. But it was the ancient wisdom of the Barataria and the hands of a Hedge Wizard Bayou Earl that brought him back to the line.
The 12 Days of Wintermis will continue. We are moving into the final stretch, and the Bayou has proven once again: if you know where to look, it provides exactly what you need to heal.
