Bayou Tuesday: Mapping the Frozen Expanse
Tuesday, December 2, 2025
5 AM. The coffee is hot, and the fog is thick outside my window.
It’s Bayou Tuesday. Usually, this is the moment I welcome you to the mud, the cypress knees, and the slow, heavy heat of the swamp. But not today. Today, we are trading the humidity for the chill.
Welcome to the Frozen Land.
Looking out at the mist rising off the bayou this morning, my mind isn't on the water; it is thousands of miles away, drifting through a different kind of wilderness. To survive a place, you have to respect its geography. In the swamp, you respect the depth of the water and the things that hide in the mud. In Thrivaldi, you respect the distance and the ice.
So, for this Bayou Tuesday, I am unrolling the official parchment.
Welcome to the Tygerian Isle of Thrivaldi.
Take a moment to look at the lay of the land. This isn't just a sketch; it’s a warning.
To the north, you see the jagged, dark spires of Shadow Frost City, a place that looks like it bites the sky. To the west, the Ice Giant Port sits on the edge of the frozen sea, a hub for titans. In the south, the crystalline beauty of Cryzelle glitters like a diamond in the snow. And in the center... the Great Ice Dragon watches over it all.
But the most important thing on this map isn't the cities. It’s the legend in the bottom right corner.
1 Inch (or 1 Hex/Square) = 133 Miles.
Let that sink in for a second.
In most fantasy maps, a square is maybe 10 miles. A day's walk. But here? A single square is 133 miles. That is a massive expanse of frozen, unforgiving terrain.
Traveling from Isdrak Port to Shadow Frost City isn't a quick jaunt. It is an expedition. It is weeks of travel through blizzards, over glaciers, and across plains where the wind cuts like a knife. This scale is why the Hypothermia Rules we talked about yesterday are so deadly. You aren't just popping over to the next town; you are embarking on a journey where every mile fights you.
In the bayou, travel is slow because the mud grabs your boots. In Thrivaldi, travel is slow because the cold tries to stop your heart.
So, as you study this map today, think about the logistics. How will you carry enough wood for the Hearth Fire to last 133 miles? How will you keep your party warm when the nearest shelter is three inches away on the map, but three weeks away on foot?
The swamp has its dangers, but this... this is a whole new level of survival.
Study the map well, friends. We start meeting the Rulers of these cities tomorrow.
