Happy Saturday, everyone.
If you are refreshing this page expecting to see an explosion of "Wintermiss" cheer, I owe you an explanation. By now, the website was supposed to be live with the "Holiday Fun-Filled" series I’ve been teasing all week. I had the schedule mapped out perfectly in my head: the ultimate guide to rustic gift wrapping, the secret family recipe for sugar cookies, and the photo tour of our DIY cabin decorations.
Well, I have a confession to make. Those posts aren't up yet. And for that, I am genuinely sorry.
I had a perfectly curated plan for today. In my mind, I was going to wake up before the sun, feeling refreshed and ambitious. I was going to pour a perfectly brewed coffee, sit by the window while the world was quiet, and type away until the blog was overflowing with festive content. I imagined having everything uploaded and formatted by 8:00 AM, leaving me the rest of the day to relax.
The reality of my Saturday morning was... drastically different.
It started with the alarm clock, or rather, my complete inability to hear it. There is something about the air up here at the cabin—crisp, cold, and thinning—that makes the blankets feel twice as heavy and sleep feel twice as necessary. When I finally blinked awake, the sun was already high in the sky, judging me. I was behind schedule before my feet even hit the cold wood floor.
Priorities shifted immediately. Step one: Coffee. Vital, life-sustaining coffee.
Step two: Realizing I wasn't the only one awake. Uncle Bill emerged from his room, looking exactly like someone who expected a Saturday morning feast. You can’t just ignore family during the holidays, and you certainly can't let Uncle Bill go hungry. He has that specific look that says, "I smell coffee, where is the bacon?" So, instead of tapping away at a keyboard, I found myself in the kitchen, rattling heavy cast-iron pans and whipping up a full cooked breakfast. The laptop sat sadly on the table, closed, while bacon sizzled and eggs were scrambled.
After breakfast, the holiday chaos continued. I looked around the cabin and realized that our "cozy winter vibe" had quickly crossed the line into "disaster zone." It’s amazing how quickly a small space gets messy when you’re trying to decorate and live in it simultaneously. There were pine needles embedded in the rug, ribbons draped over lampshades, and the aftermath of breakfast piling up in the sink. I couldn't focus on writing about beautiful holiday setups when I was currently living in a clutter catastrophe.
So, I spent the next few hours scrubbing, sweeping, and trying to wrangle the cabin back into some semblance of order. It took longer than expected, mostly because I kept getting distracted by old photos or rearranging the ornaments on the mantle for the fifth time.
Which brings us to right now.
I am finally sitting down. The cabin is clean(ish). Uncle Bill is full and happy, dozing off in the recliner. And I am staring at the blinking cursor, fighting a massive wave of sleepiness. It turns out that sleeping in, cooking a big meal, and deep-cleaning a cabin is exhausting work. I am trying so hard to stay awake and get these fun posts written, but my brain is currently operating on reserve power.
I promise you this: I will get them out. But I’m not going to publish them half-hearted just to hit a deadline. They will go up when they are finished, fun, and worthy of your time. I want the "Wintermiss" content to be perfect for you guys.
Thank you for your patience with my slow Saturday start. As for me, I'm going to brew another pot of coffee—the extra strong stuff—and attempt to wake my brain up to get this work done.
I hope everyone out there is having a fantastic "Wintermiss" today, whatever that looks like for you. Hopefully, it involves less cleaning and more relaxing than my morning did!
Hang tight, the holiday fun is loading… slowly.
Yours for now,
Captain Hedges
