The Chronicles of Nocturnis: The Badge, the Bayou, and the Sovereign Pact

The Silverton Foundations: The Merchant Pioneers (1600s–1830s)

The history of commerce in the archipelago begins not with a throne, but with a sail. As far back as the 1600s, the Silverton Trading Company was already charting the unpredictable mists of the Whispering Isles. Using their early merchant and trader shipping fleets, the Silvertons were the first to venture into the "Uncharted Isles." They didn't just map the land; they established the first vital trade links between the isolated ruling families of the outer reaches.

For two centuries, they moved goods in and out—spices, rare woods, and ancient artifacts—quietly building a small fortune while the rest of the world saw only fog. This centuries-old monopoly on the trade routes gave the Silvertons the liquid capital they needed to transition from sailors to the industrial titans of the new world.

The Era of Sovereign Justice (1823–1859)

By the early 19th century, the archipelago was a world of blood-loyalty. In 1823, the first true seed of order was planted by a warrior. Emperor Rajah formed the Tygerian Rangers on Sea Tiger Island. These elite scouts were the first organized force in the islands, guarding the Ether Dragon portals and ensuring the ancient ruins remained untouched.

During this time, the law on the other islands was held by the Island Sheriffs, appointed by the Swan Island Families (Hedges-De Lacy) and the Tiger Families. While these Lords held the titles, the Silverton Trading Company was funding the growth. Starting in the 1840s and 1850s, the Silvertons used their vast fortune to bring in Chinese immigrants in large numbers to serve as the backbone of their labor force. This labor was essential during the Whispering Isles Gold Land Rushes of the 1850s. While others dug for gold, the Silvertons managed the logistics of the rush, extracting "Liquid Gold" and building the infrastructure that would eventually make them the landlords of the city.

The Gridiron Covenant and the Land Grab (1860–1869)

The 1860s were the most pivotal decade in our history. In the city, Lord Mayor Durrell (the architect of the early "Blue Rot") was busy trying to organize the city's scattered law enforcement, having hired the first Constables in 1835 and formed the City Watch in 1853.

In the high-level talks leading up to the great settlement, Durrell sat at the table alongside the Noble Lords. He was the one who negotiated the massive deal where the Silvertons, using the wealth amassed since the 1600s, purchased 1/8th of the city of Nocturnis colony. This gave the merchant family control over the docks and the industrial districts where their labor force was building the early transit arteries.

In 1862, the Swan Island and Tiger Families, with Old Man Durrell representing the city's interests, signed the Meridian Pact, a sovereign treaty that moved their noble grudges from the battlefield to the Gridiron. The Silverton Trading Company, now the city's industrial landlords, provided the funding and the infrastructure to settle these noble scores on the turf.

By 1869, the City of Nocturnis officially unified its districts into one Police Department (NPD). Under the leadership of the Durrells (and later the Barlows), the department immediately curdled into the "Blue Rot," using the badge to tax the trade that the Silvertons had been moving for three hundred years.

The Transit Revolution and the Shield (1960–1969)

A century later, the power balance shifted again as the Hedges-De Lacy Sovereignty realized that controlling the land wasn't enough—they had to control the movement.

In 1960, Tiger Transit was formed as the official armored logistical arm of the Hedges family. However, the Silvertons were not to be outdone. In 1963, the Jade Dragon Transit was chartered by the Silvertons. They appointed their chief enforcer—the legendary Jade Dragon—as their new military head to handle their "Hidden Path" trade routes. These routes, discovered during their centuries of maritime exploration, honored the heritage of the laborers who had first charted those waters.

To protect these veins of empire, the Tygerian Rangers and the loyalist Island Sheriffs were reorganized into the global force known as Tiger Force. The old Sheriffs were promoted to Trade Sheriffs and attached to the Harbor Masters. By the end of 1969, the "Blue Rot" in the city was effectively boxed in. They may have controlled the city streets, but Tiger Force and the Silverton-backed Jade Dragon Transit controlled the sea, the sky, and the very lifeblood of the islands.
