Day 13: The Whisper in the Glass
Date: Day 13 — 23:30 Hours Location: Sublevel 4, Secure Containment By: Captain Hedges
I haven't slept since I saw what was inside that egg.
I spent the night in the lab with Dr. Thorne, watching the monitors. The "World Egg" isn't just sitting there. It’s singing. Not a sound we can hear, but a low-frequency psychic broadcast that’s giving everyone on the base a migraine.
"Why haven't we incinerated it yet, Doctor?" I asked, my hand hovering near the alarm panel. "We have plasma charges that could vaporize this entire room."
Dr. Thorne looked pale under the fluorescent lights. "Because, Captain, it’s a failsafe. If the seed detects fatal damage, it instantly triggers the terraforming process. It will flash-convert the surrounding ten miles into toxic jungle in seconds. We’d be dead before the smoke cleared."
So, we are held hostage by an unhatched egg.
Just then, the blast doors hissed open. It wasn't military brass. It was Bayou Earl, the Green Tygerian Hedge Wizard who saved our tails on Day 7. He leaned against the doorframe, smelling faintly of swamp mud and ozone, eyeing the glowing egg with distaste.
"Y'all got a nasty tick problem down here," Earl drawled.
"It's a bio-mechanical terraforming matrix," Thorne corrected nervously.
Earl snorted. "It's ancient, scaly, bad mojo, Doc. I can feel it trying to get in my head. Science ain't gonna fix this one. You need something older." He tapped his cypress staff on the metal floor. "We need to figure out how to keep Sleeping Beauty there sedated until we can figure out how to send her back to whatever hell she crawled out of."
Great. The fate of our world now rests on a nervous scientist and a swamp wizard.
And the Naga inside the glass? I swear I just saw one of her six hands twitch.
