Review: Ken’s Starfaring (1976) – The Blueprint for the Void
In 1976, Ken gave the gaming world its first true sci-fi RPG: Starfaring. It was a vision of the future that prioritized speed, high-stakes ship combat, and the strange mysteries of the "Deep Dark."
What makes it special is its simplicity and scale. It doesn't get bogged down in thousand-page technical manuals. It gives you the stars and says, "Go." However, the original framework was built for ships of steel and silicon—vessels of cold machinery.
Our Mission: The Bio-Mechanical Evolution
On The Adventures of Captain Hedges, we aren't just playing Ken's game; we are evolving it. We are taking the 1976 framework and "marrying" it to the visceral, high-fantasy soul of Monsters! Monsters!
How we are changing the game:
From Metal to Meat: We have stripped away the standard tech and replaced it with the CON x50 hide of the Celestivorus lineage.
From Computers to Consciousness: Instead of simple Nav-Computers, we use the LSDX-6000 fueled brain of the noble hybrid, Azron Fea (The Aegis).
The Chaos Factor: We’ve introduced the "3" Rule (1 & 2)—a mechanic that represents the instability of mixing extra-planar Ethus energy with bionic tech.
We are keeping the fast-paced spirit of Ken’s original masterpiece but injecting it with the noble duty and biological power of the Zimrala universe.
What We’re Doing with It: The Shakedown
Our goal is to create a Hybrid Campaign where your crew's Kindred Multipliers (Tygerians, Hawkmen, Egyptos Humans) are the heart of the machine.
We are moving away from the safe docks of Zimrala One to see if this New Bio Ship Bridge between Ken's science and our biology can hold up against the Slish and the mysteries of the multiverse portals. We’re using Starfaring as our map, but Azron Fea is our soul, reborn in to the Manticore Star Ship
